Now I have my new MR DVD Player I have to choose between R1 or R2.

On an earlier thread someone mentioned this:

Well if they apply horizontal and vertical EE to the R1 again like SW:TPM I shall be sticking to the R2.

    Whats that about.

The only difference I can see between the two is that R2 has "R2-D2: Beneath the Dome mockumentary trailer"

    Any thoughts

    EE = edge enhancement.
Apparently it isn't a factor on the new film according to reviews at places like www.dvdfile.com

the R2D2 beneath the dome promo is on both R1 and R2 discs

    R1 for me

The R2 is censored, as is the R4.

That makes R1 the only version to get in my book.

    Hi,

Was it me, or did 'Mothman Prohrycies' (cant spell it) have too much EE.

The brickwork and overhead cables just twinkled.

    >The R2 is censored, as is the R4.

Oh, really? Where's your evidence for this? According to one of the online reviews the UK check discs are coded R2 only - presumably because of the 1 sec cut required by the BBFC to pass the film as a 'PG'.

I can't see any reason why the R4 version should suffer the same cut and until I hear otherwise from someone who has actually seen the R4 disc I'd rate the R4/PAL disc as the version to go for.

R1 - to match my R1 TPM, for progressive scan, for no third party imposed censorship.

but on dvdcompare it states that the region 4 is not cut please see below

and shows only the region 2 is cut

    it says
OVERALL : R1 - These INITIAL specs show the only differences are the audio options, HoloNet News Website, THX certification and cuts - which suggest that you should go for Region 1. All discs are released week commencing 11th November 2002

    Cuts
    R1 - No cuts
R2 - 1 second to headbutt in order a get a PG rating
    R4 - No Cuts

    region 4 for me only
if the region 4 is as dvd compare say and is uncut

    as it states on cd-wow
might be uncut and is in pal a better picture quality than nstc (region 1)

A new member indeed but not the sort to recommend the R1 version when a) there's no evidence the R4 is cut, b) the extras are identical c) the R4 is PAL and therefore compatible with UK players/televisions as well as offering the benefit of superior resolution over the R1 and c) as cheap if not cheaper to order online than the R1 given the strength of the pound against the aussie dollar.

Perhaps someone should add the R4 to the poll?

R4?? Still means you have to have a chipped player. Please give an example of a UK Player that wont Play NTSC DVDs?

Matter of opinion. Extra lines do not equal better quality.

you will not need a multi region dvd player
    as star wars aotc is
dual region like Back to the future and can play on region 2 machine cause it's both region 2/4

    >Please give an example of a UK Player that wont Play NTSC DVDs?

Well OK I'll concede that but there are still plenty of TV's - including those budget widescreen sets that go for around the £300 mark - that only display NTSC in black and white! And before you ask, yes, I have seen these sets with my own eyes.

Besides even if you do have an NTSC compatible TV why on earth would you want to watch AOTC with 3:2 pulldown. Hell with that!

    >Matter of opinion. Extra lines do not equal better quality.

I agree with you that extra lines do not equal better quality - if say the PAL DVD transfer is poor compared to the R1. For example an R2 non-anamorphic picture transferred from a composite source vs an R1 anamorphic transfer from a component source. But do you really, seriously think this is going to be an issue with AOTC?

As a video format PAL offers superior vertical resolution compared to NTSC. Since this IS Star Wars we're discussing I think we're virtually guaranteed a top notch transfer from Lucasfilm whatever the region. So taking all that into account plus the censorship trim I think it's got to be the R4.

PAL PQ is excellent, but NTSC with Progressive Scan wins hands down.

It's R1 for me. I can't stand the 4% speed up of PAL formated disc's. Star Wars main theme sounds too fast, and those speeded up voices. No thanks!

I like my movies to run their proper times i.e. AOTC NTSC runs for 142mins. I think you'll find the PAL version is a little less.

I guess it's up to the individual, and what he/she likes.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU IN YOUR CHOICE OF REGION :D
    JD.
PS. It's rumoured that the R2 version has a little EE. The link to the site that reviewed the R2 version, has a link to it on one of the AOTC threads in DVD Talk.

When and where did the DVD Comittee to allowing dual region discs? Please enlighten us please. If you persist in merely repeating a typo on a website we'll hardly get to the crux of the issue will we Pete18? Besides, I can't see any such coding decision made by the industry's forum:
