While im waiting for my Sony NW-HD5 to arrive i noticed most people on the board using the Atrac codec already are using high bitrates like 256kbps. Sony claims 13,000 tracks can fit on the player @ 64kbps, is there a noticeable difference between say 64kbps and 105kbps, is a 64kbps atrac file say as good as a 128kbps mp3 file?
Your recommendations would be much appreciated.

13,000 tracks are able to fit on the player but this is at atrac3plus 48kbps. That is about the equivalent of mp3 96 kbps. (Not that good)

You can fit about 11,000 tracks on there using atrac3plus 64kbps which is the one I use. It sounds very good and adequate for portable use, using low to mid range headphones. It is equivalent approx to mp3 128 kbps.

If you have High end headphones or you want definition to your music, use the 256 kbps. It takes up lots of space, so you get about 3000 tracks on it.

Atrac3 (without the plus) is available at all the bitrates in between, but it is an older codec and the benefits wont be as great and the quality gap will be narrower compared with mp3. eg 66kbps is equivalent to 96 kbps mp3.

Thanks for your reply davisneil. Any chance of someone encoding a track in the various bitrates and telling me the size of the resultant files?

    Atrac 3plus 48k..1.5mb
    64k...2mb
    256k..8mb

Atrac 3 66k approx 2.5mb (older codec so compession isnt as intense)

Thanks mate, what about Atrac3plus @ 105 or 132kbps? thinking of using these inbetween rates for best quality/file size ratio.

105 as i said in the previous post

132 i guess would be about 4.25 mb slightly more than mp3 128k

Thanks davis, think i'll probly rip most with the atrac3plus 64kbps codec as you recommended, and maybe go upto the 256kbps with certain albums.
