Hi - can the ATI cards be used with the new SLi motherboards does anyone know or is SLi restricted to just Nvidia graphics cards.

I ask as it seems that the ATI cards on their own seem to be faster in general than the Nvidia cards and so - logically - it would seem to follow that 2x ATI will be faster than 2x Nvidia.

If not then are there any future developments from ATI which will compete with SLi from Nvidia as it seems to me that PCI Express is the emerging standard for this year.

Also, am I right in thinking that it is now possible to have pci-e motherboards supporting AMD chips and not just Intel.

I'm looking to perform either a system upgrade - perhaps even a complete rebuild and I really want a top notch flyer for games such as fs9.1, half life2, Doom3, Far Cry etc. - budget approx.£1600 and don't need monitor, keyboard or mouse - just the tower and its' components.

    Hope you can help.

    Cheers
    Rick

Are there motherboards for SLI cards? I thought it was purely a graphics card feature that worked in any mobo.

No ATI SLI at the mo but it is under development and should be along soon.

    KraGorn.
There are motherboards for SLI in effect because you need two graphics card slots (PCI-E only at the moment)

There is a card coming along soon that has two GPUs on (SLI on one card so only a single slot required) but at the mo only stable on the card manufacturers motherboards (special bios).

Ah, okay, I see, I hadn't equated it with SLI per se, but I guess that's the only reason. AIUI though these are simply to PCI-e slots capable of taking a graphics car, but equally able to take other PCI-e cards, is that right?

There are motherboards out there This is one - maybe there just isn't any stock available at the moment ! The nForce4 SLI chipset is the main player at the moment, although Gigabyte have done an SLI board for Intel processors see here

Yes I had 2 12MB Vodoo 2 cards linked together - I was so proud of them, 24MB for a video card was so over the top then !
