ATI Radeon HD5670

I have built a HTPC but can not seem to play video files smoothly without jitter.

Spec Basics:

AMD Phenom II quad core 955
4Gb ram
ATI HD 5670

most files are MKV but not all and i do get this jitter (either flicks or mild pauses) on all files.

I'm trying to use XBMC or VLC as a player.

Have tried updating all drivers and firmware, codecs (but not sure if settings are correct) such as CCCP & FFD

Can't think of anything else to do, would really be greatful for some advise.

Yes, your hardware it up to it.

What kind of 'jitter' are you seeing? If you are trying to play back 24Hz (Blu-ray) or 60Hz (NTSC/US material) at 50Hz you will see very slight pauses.

Edit: The same is true of trying to play UK material at anything other than multiples of 25Hz.

Mainly on slow moving parts it looks like it freezes for a split second. How would i find out if they are 24Hz or 60Hz. I will play around and see if that is what is causing the problem. Cheers
