I read an article a short while back about how young people are living longer with their parents - often going away to uni and then moving back in and staying there until their late twenties. Just wondering when avforumers moved out? I'm 22 next week and still live with my parents

I bought my first home and moved out of my parents when I was 20, basically as soon as I could afford to.

a week before my 16th birthday (much to my parents shock!!) i couldn't wait to get out but the relationship has been fantastic in the 15 years since :) and it was, in hindsight, very much the right thing to do...
that said my younger brother is 25 and wants to stay as long as possible - more beer money :):):)

Moved out of my Dad's house at 18.....into my girlfriends parents house :rotfl: Now 22, and we're moving into our first flat next week (and i dont mind admitting it's rather daunting).

You could afford to buy your first place at 20?! Much as i love Cornwall i think moving to another part of the country would be better financially :(

Its a long standing joke with my parents that as I went to a boarding school at 7, I've never spent more than eight weeks at home since then! I would say that I "moved out" (the definition for me being that I had more of my possesions with me than lurking back with my folks) when I went to university at 18 but I was completely financially independent by 20 and bought a house at 22.

I'm 19 still living with my parents. I suspect even if I wanted to move out they wouldn't let me. Then again, it's going to my responsibility to look after them.

Young adults moving out seems like a very white* thing to do. I've never heard of or nor seen any Indians moving out of their parents house.

*Put that the best I could, without causing any offence - I hope :D.

19 when I went . Glad I did as I could have afforded it if I had left it 'til I was 25+

House prices were much lower 16 years ago, I think I paid £37000 for my first house back then which was a major struggle at the time.

Moved out at 18 at first when I went to Uni, moved back in for a year one year later, then moved out and to another country aged 21.

My brother moved out aged 21 but gets my mum to sort out his bills and stuff (and if some top up is needed, she signs the cheque).

I think its always been similar apart from a brief period in the 80's to mid 90's when mortgages were easier to get and job mobility in general had increased like never seen before. My parents in the early 60's had to save a much bigger deposit that the 5% I needed in 1993.

Now high prices have reversed the trend, you could almost say 'back to normal'.

I moved out at 21 because I had a job away from home after Uni, bought 3 years later.

Just bought my first place, woodworm and all, and should be moving in next week.

I am 29 by the way, up till now never been able to afford my own place, didn't finish uni till i was 21, been paying back debits the first 5 years out of uni and been saving up a deposit for the last 2 years.

Only been able to move out now as I am sharing a mortgage with one of mates. Even without my AV addiction. its been frustrating as I have had enough of a deposit for the last year but the house price rises just took the prices out of the reach of how much i could afford to pay each month, would have had to have taken at least 5 times my wage, and that just wasn't viable.

Typically one of my other mates who left school at 16 has almost paid off his first mortgage, he became an electrician. Earns almost double what i do in a year. If i had the choice to do over I wouldn't go into IT. Mind you, helps his wife is a big time lawyer. Not that i'm complaining, mumble, mumble, mumble

I've just done it - moved out of my mums house last month into my first home. I'm 25 currently, 26 this coming December :)

I'd have liked to do it MUCH sooner tho - just financial constraints that have had it on hold. Been saving and buying stuff for a house for the last few years, and started preparing for it in 2003!!! Taken me this long to actually do it.....

Ain't looking back tho - best thing I ever did! (That said, not had it long so haven't had a shed load of bills pile up and leave me high n dry lol)

Moved into halls last September, aged 18. After this summer, will rent a house with mates, 12 month contract, doubt I'll go back. Yay!

my parents lived in south london so i could never afford to move out locally. i moved out when i was 25 and i moved north to lincolnshire as it was my girlfriends home and a good place for us to buy our first home. back then on our joint income we had no chance of buying in london!

The way i see it is that i will leave to go to uni next year, then after a year in halls i will move back home if i cant afford to pay rent on a house and commute to uni then when i'm 21 and finish uni i will get a job and move out pretty much within a year.

I have a mate who is just leaving home and he his 35 so i dont think it matter really just when your ready.
