I have bought the above SPDIF module that plugs into the motherboard and sits at the back of the case. It has a Coxial and optical output. I have a coxial connector into a dolby amp.

Now with the software you get with the asus motherboard you can setup 5.1 via the analogue connectors on the motherboard but there is no provision for just outputting to the SPDIF, however WinDVD platinum can output via an external SPDIF which works no problems.

Does anyone have this motherboard with the SPDIF module working in windows so windows outputs in 5.1 and just not stereo ?

    Thanks Ivan

    Hi Ivan,

I have the A8N-VM CSM which is the predecessor to yours and have the same design. I'm using the Pure Video Decoder in order to select SPDIF pass thru to my Dolby amp.

    HTH,

    Richie.

I have this motherboard with the SPDIF widget. In the ASUS utility you just ensure that Disable Digital Output is not set. It sounds like you have it correctly set up as WinDVD is outputting 5.1 The card just passes the bit stream to amplifier which decodes to 5.1 if it is Dolby Digital or DTS otherwise it will be stereo PCM. Windows sounds are only stereo. You need to setup 5.1 in MCE but it will only output DD 5.1 if the source e.g. a DVD is DD 5.1

Nigel sounds about right but every time I run up a DVD I have to manually tell the software to output 5.1 to the SPDIF connector as it defaults to stereo output only. Anything I am not doing right ?

There was a similar issue with the previous board and it required a registry hack to force 5.1 or else it defaulted back to stereo.

Do a search in this forum and you should find it

    Hi,

Where did you get your spdif module from... I can't seem to find anyone who stocks it.

    Cheers
