Astro A40 Wireless System

As with everything wireless..quality always suffers for the sake of losing a few wires..

I'll be sticking with my Onkyo and Tannoy F4's. Don't think the Neighbour's appreciate BFBC2 on "war tapes" audio setting when the tanks rattle the walls but man does it sound good...

Quote from Stan Press of Astro Gaming ... "We've made it clear that we weren't going to release a wireless product until we could make it sound as good as our wired solution. Today is that day.

ASTRO Gaming is beyond excited to announce for the Holiday season, the ASTRO MixAmp™ 5.8, a wireless 5.8 Ghz version of ASTRO's award-winning MixAmp™."

Might just be worth taking a closer look.

Well this is probably only going to be a quick update as I am doing this from iPhone which is a bit of a pain.

Ordered direct from Astro UK yesterday and arrived today. I went for the A40 Headset and the Wireless MixAmp at £189. The first thing that you notice is that the packaging is unbelievable quality and the videos I watched on YouTube don't come close to seeing it all in the flesh so to speak.

The MixAmp Rx comes already paired to the Tx so it's literally plug in a few cables and you're off. The unit does come with an optical cable so why they try and sell you a braided one for loads of money I don't know as fibre optic is fibre optic as far as I'm concerned.

Putting the headset on and it fits like a glove and is very comfortable.

Now I have never used any other surround sound headphones so I don't really have anything to compare against but I was blown away by the sound.

Playing COD BO you can hear every footstep and every bullet almost. It is a totally immersive experience. I have yet to use the bass boost button but without it there is a good range of sound.

I have only used them for about 30 mins in total but I can't see why you would now buy the wired version as I cannot believe that there is any difference in sound and the lack of wires is a definate plus.

I will post some more tomorrow hopefully. But after tonights experience I cannot recommend them enough!!!

How does the PS3 voice chat work? Is that wireless, or do you need a dongle/wire/extra to make it work?

tpurslow thanks for the quick review, looking forward to some more feedback later on.

Looking at the diagram for them there is a Usb lead that connects from the Ps3 to the main mixamp and then that transmits over the wireless signal. The set up instructions can be found HERE.

Sooo tempted by these, they're very expensive, but i guess they would last you for years. I'm just not sure about wether to go for wired or wireless..... Wireless has 7.1, where wired has 5.1, but there is only optical input in then wireless, whilst wired has coax and mp3 input (you can mix your mp3 player into the game sound) plus you have the need for batteries all the time in the wireless (12 hour life aint much) hmmm.

The mp3 feature has never had that big a pull for me simply as on pretty much any platform you can mix in music via the console. Where it really comes into it's own is wiring things like baby monitors or telephones. I'm happy with my 09 mix amp, still does everything I need it to with the highest of quality. If you are handy with boxing and long optical leads you can do a nice neat install where possible but when that isn't an option then you have the wireless option.

Does it really matter?, as it's all sound field emulation anyway..

So how am I getting on….
*
Well first of all it fair to say that I am very pleased with the setup and glad I bought them. There are lots and lots of reviews out there saying the A40’s are not the best phones but the MixAmp is great etc etc.
*
It really does depend what you want to compare them to and what you really want out of the headset.
*
I think the sound produced by the A40’s is very very good, could it be better? Probably. Does it create a fantastic immersive surround sound setup for gaming. Definitely.
*
I can only compare the headset sound with what I have already.
*
I have a pair of Bose on ear headphones and I would say the sound quality is on a par with these although the A40’s are a little more immersive as they are around ear.
*
The most important thing for me is the comfort for prolonged COD sessions and I can say they are super comfortable.
*
Sound is a personal thing but what I will say is that Astro offer money back if you are not happy so I would recommend anyone that is unsure to order and try them out.
*
I will be keeping mine because as a complete package I don’t think there is anything better.

Still undecided, so many people seem to prefer different ones, whether it be the astro a40's, tritton axp pros, sharkoon xtactic v3, or the turtle beach px41's ! I wish there was somewhere to go to try them all ! It's not like i'm pulling my hair out at the moment with my tv speakers, so i may just opt for the cheapest option, which is the turtle beach px21's which are about £55, then i can upgrade them to the PX41's with the amp you can buy seperatly if i think i could do with a more ''surround'' effect.... Still it will cost over £100, which then makes me think do i get the best you can get for the sake of an extra £50 quid or so....d'oh.

IMO, if you go for headphones/set, and get the mixamp, forget the A40's..they are flat, quite lifeless compared to others, and overpriced, for what they are..you would be better off going for something else, and coupling it with the Mixamp..

The reason that the A40's are widely known, is with the MLG deal, what with their advertising/sponsorship, they aren't that great compared to other headsets.

That is true, but you can just get Astro's Mixamp and pair upto almost any other Headset, with a few modifcations ofcourse, cant you ?
