"Assault" Banned for Profanity

This is getting ridiculous now.

I love the game, but I am having massive problems with the Profanity filter. In every CoD game since Modern Warfare, I always name my classes the same thing. I like to keep things simple. So I usually keep two Assault Rifle classes. Well, whenever I try to put the world "Assault" in any of my classes, it blocks it for profanity. This is pretty funny, since the word Assault appears a lot in the game, especially multiplayer. I am SURE others have brought this up already, and I just hope someone of importance sees this and maybe makes a note of it. It kinda sucks that I can't name my Assault class "Assault Class".

That does seems a bit harsh, considering they use the word in create a class!

I haven't bothered naming classes. My mate said he couldn't name one Terrorist though :)
Strange considering only you can see it?!

Yet there's thousands of player cards with cocks etc on them that everyone can see!

I tried to set my clan tag as MUSE after the greatest band in the world and that is also banned.

I got told I couldn't call my class "Assault" too. Had assumed it was due to having "Ass" in there but from what DarthQuack says who knows?

Considering the game is an 18, what does it matter you naming a class which only you see?

Well, it's the 4th COD game in a row to feature major bugs with the clan tag entry. Often, it's your gamertag to blame (as in, you could be unlucky and be disallowed a clan tag because your PG-rated gamertag is on a blacklist).

The ridiculous thing is, the game is happy to display your gamertag to everyone (voluntarily playing an 18-rated game), which may or may not be offensive (eg. all those using numbers to sneak in racist/homophobic names), the initials of a certain far-right organisation have traditionally been accepted as a clan tag, but a player's private configuration settings being censored...

Hi,

FWIW it's not profanity that's the issue. It's to stop numpties and morons from naming their team's with very dubious names that may include - and I apologise sincerely in advance, if anyone is offended by these, as they are purely meant for explanatory purposes only:

- A55 (change the 5 to an "s")
- B1tch
- P4k1 (racial epithet)
- N1ggaz (or other variations on the same term)
- W0gz (again, or other variations)

and/or other potentially suspect names, that may be linked to real-life organisations of less-than dubious merit, e.g. White Supremacist or KKK Clan groups in the US.

As I say, it's not the profanity in and of itself that's the issue, but the way people deliberately misuse/abuse certain words to get around profanity-filters, that means that everyone has to be treated like a kid online. It's also to protect the game makers from any legal comeback in the USA, when a parent complains that their 13-year old was caught playing Black Ops online (which the kid shouldn't be doing in the first place, but you get my drift), and comes across some fruity language the parent disapproves of, and hence, the game makers can't then be sued by said parents/guardians.

Incidentally, "massacre" is allowed, but "assault" is prohibited due to profanity (offending letter combination not shown). Much like the "clan name denied due to prohibited text" problem, it's presented as if it's a bug in the game when more likely it's a poorly-thought-out way of handling a secret blacklist (could be some regional settings at work here, maybe "assault" is a serious insult in some languages).

I suspect they're just passing prospective class names through the same erratic profanity checker that rejects clan tags based on validating your gamertag - it would certainly explain the absurdity of a game that lets you select an "assault rifle" not allowing you to then call that class "assault".

I'm sure they could have added an exception for the word Assault.

Code:
if(name.contains(ass) && !name.equals(String.ignorecase(assault)))
{
yer name is blocked
}
else
{
class.setname(name);
}

You get the picture.

Does this also mean using the name clASS 1 would also be blocked? It seems like it only checks the first characters for the offending text if massacre is fine, maybe someone used String.startswith() instead of String.contains().

As I already indicated, it's not the "ass" part, it's the word "assault". Try a few class renames and you'll see. Also, a few other PG-rated oddities lead me to believe that much like the gamertag check when you name your clan, IW/Treyarch/Activision have outsourced their "profanity" checking.

Yeah, they've outsourced their "profanity" checking to Microsoft. Go to the dashboard, edit your profile, change your motto. Bet you can't use the word "assault" either.

You are right, I tried ASSMAGNET and it was fine but ASSAULT was not. MS think it is fine to attract arses but not assault them, where would they get an idea like that :confused:

It's completely random. There's a "what's the most PG-rated word you can find that's considered profanity by M$" game in here. My current favourite is "bungle", but I'm sure I'll stumble on a few more.

- P4k1 (racial epithet)

Pretty sure that term is allowed, saw it briefly the other day and it was all plain text as well, no numbers.

Ill try it later. I can use though seeing as I am one. :smashin:

Yep, just tried it and it works.

Lets see what happens when people pick up an engraved gun of mine. :devil:

Of course, with enough Googling, every apparently PG-rated word in the universe is also potentially slang for something naughty, so I can sort of see why Microsoft (and game publishers using their random profanity filter) would seek to prevent certain words (including those contained in your gamertag) from being displayed in XBox live bios, private weapon class names, etc. Total farce.
