After watching 'The Assasination of Richard Nixon' I was blown away (not for the first time) over Sean Penns acting. Truly magnificent and after the top drawer 21 Grams and Mystic River I think that this chap (who has came some way since Madges Shangai Surprise) must be up there with the best. I would now put him in the top 3 must see actor films.
Mind you nothing will beat his David Klenfield in Carlitos Way - CLASS).

Not that I'd want to say I said so in my review but :)

Seriously - I still think that he was amazing in "I Am Sam" and anyone who hasn't seen it, really should - it's a touching story and he is so believable in the role (it's even highlighted on one of the DVD extras with regard to his preparation).

Glad you enjoyed the movie as much as I did - it's so easy for some of these gems to slip under the radar.

Yes. I would say so. You can now bench mark a film. If Penn is in it, expect it to be good.

I thought he was brilliant in Carlito's Way - stole the show from Pacino who was also on song!

I think Guy Pierce and Christian Bale are at least as good.
Edit: Add Russell Crowe to the list.

Yep as mentioned in my previous post this film is v good. Sean Penn gets better and the comparisions with deniro are justified - saying that old bobby seems on a downward spiral with his comedies recently.

I like Guy Pearce & Christian Bale, but note sure I would class them as best character actors.

Russell Crowe for me is outstanding, absolutely filled the screen with Gladiator and the scene where he confronts the Emperor for the first time always makes my hair stand on end every time. Add to that great performances in totally different roles such as Romper Stomper, Beautiful Mind and the Insider and you have someone that is top of the game!

I also think that Johnny Depp is :smashin: as well

He's in The Machinist too - but he's not yet in the same league as Penn, Pacino and De Niro
