I am using a VGA connection and when i play dvds the black bars at the top and bottom are bigger than when i use my stand alone dvd player? Is this right? Its a little off putting.

I think it has something to do with VGA eliminating overscan.

on most dvd's, yes, as theyre in a wider aspect ratio than 16:9, eg 2.35:1 being common in many films, which will have large black bars in any dvd player, and they may well be larger on vga than component due to the elimination of overscan.

If you are connected via component then there will be overscan which will cut off some of the black bars but with VGA there is no overscan so you get 100% of what is on the disc.

So basically that is how its supposed to be? VGA gives a better representation of the actual disc?
