Hi, I'm looking to update my lad's phone and want to use his existing ASDA pay as you go SIM.

The handset he wants is £70 from ASDA but only half the price from O2 or Vodaphone shops. If I buy the handset from these networks will the handset be locked?, if locked for how long? or can I just put the Asda SIM in and away he goes?

    All help gratefully received

    Cheers!

Cheers I guess this will still work out cheaper, does unlocking invalidate any manufacturers warranty?

The handset will not necessarily be locked. Sometimes they aren't. You really need to try it to be sure.

ASDA use the Vodafone network, so you may find the SIM card will work in the phone bought from the VF shop.

My old phone was/is a Vodafone branded device. I've had O2, Orange, Tesco (O2) and ASDA (Vodafone) SIM cards working in it.

There are websites that will give you the code to unlock your mobile free of charge.
I used it on my nokia 6230 and worked fine.

Sorry to be thick but are ALL PAYG mobile phones purchased at CarPhone Warehouse unlocked or only some of them - certain networks?????

I am asking because some of the phones they sell are obviously heavily subsidised by the PAYG network that has its sim include in the package & it would be a very good, if naughty, way to get a phone for use with an ASDA sim.

handsets bought in-store are network unlocked, with the odd network exclusive handset, which may be locked to the particular network.

Whatever you do, don't buy from the website though as you could end you with a locked version (not sure whether this would happen but don't get caught out)

All handsets that I have bought from the CPW have been unlocked to all networks (i buy new handsets when I get bored with my contract handset) what you will find is that they make you buy a topup for the network, but just use it for downloads and then toss the sim in the bin.

Which mobile are you looking to buy (need ideas for myself :D)
