The Advertising Standards Authority has slammed leading high-street chain PC World over a 'misleading' PlayStation 3 television advert.

During the TV promotion, which was for the 60GB PS3 console, an in-store sales assistant stated "and it plays your PS2 games as well".

The complainant, who challenged whether the ad was misleading as he did not believe all PS2 games could be played on the PS3, had his criticism upheld by the ASA who agreed it was misleading.

In a statement, the ASA said: "We noted at the time the ad was broadcast the 60GB PlayStation 3 could play around 80% of PlayStation 2 games only. We therefore concluded that the claim 'and it plays your PS2 games as well' was misleading."

The ASA ruled that the ad breached the television advertising standards code and "should not appear again in its current form".

I can't see how the complaints were justified. PCworld were advertising a feature that sony should be held liable for if found to be incorrect.

The 60gb's have access to upgradable firmware like all the others and backwards compatibility for ps2 titles has been increased since the launch.

it 'should not appear again in its current form' becuase sony haven't been selling the 60gb's for a year now anyway! So, what exactly was the point of that?

Well as you can longer get 60g ps3's ,I don't think PC world will lose to much sleep over there ad not being shown on tv anymore:D

It depends on whether PC world said...

1/ "It plays all of your PS2 games as well."

or just..

2/ "It plays your PS2 games as well."

So version 1/ is misleading.
Version 2/ should be OK.

But...

3/ "It plays PS2 games as well."

So.. 3/ is perfectly safe.

But where does it end...

a) A PS3 will give your hi-def gaming
b) You can stream music to your PS3
c) You can view your pictures on the PS3

Small print -
a- you need to spend £500ish on a hd tv,
b-you need a computer, plus wireless connection, plus music,
c- you need a camera, snaps from a holiday, oh a tv to view it on....

No I think the ASA have got it spot on....

The use of the word 'your' implies all PS2 games. An individual may own any number of different PS2 games, yet after being induced to buy the 60GB PS3 the consumer then finds a minority of those games will not 'play', which they were not previousley made aware of. Therefore the ad is misleading.

With reference to the above you wont see ads that actually say, 'Buy a PS3 and it will give you HD gaming'. An ad may say, 'Buy the HD ready PS3'.

Again, it's nothing to do with Sony. They provide a feature of a limited nature, yet PC World are basing their ad on that feature being more capable than it actually is. Sony haven't disguised the backward capability of the PS3 toward PC World in any way, so PC World are liable for misleading the consumer.

It's a sanction of the ASA's code. Any ad that breaches their code is prohibited from advertisement again in its current form.
