So ive decided to sell all the bits I've gathered up from work and splash the cash on something I know will work.
Ive settled on a manufacturer referbed yamaha as501 amp but I'm unsure on speakers.
Budget is up to £200 max I realise this limits new speakers but am open to 2nd hand.
What would folks recommend and does anyone know what matches well with this amp?
Prefer floorstanding but bookshelf isn't out the question

Personally I would look at the Q Acoustics 3020 which I think would go nicely if you looking for a decent pair of standmounts.

Richer sounds have them for £149.

It's only a small room but I want to buy the best I can afford now so I won't need to upgrade when we move house in a few years

If speakers are to big for your room bass will kill quality of the sound.

Maybe a half way solution (large bookshelf). These are very well respected speakers, put them on good stands and you should still be at or around your 200 limit

What about mission 773 floorstanding speakers. There's a pair locally on ebay for £90....good deal or no?

I'm sure it's a good deal but if they overpower your room well.....

    Tenner cheaper on Peter tyson.
They also have the 3010i for an extra £50, do you know what the difference is like in sound? I also like the look of the square monitor audio speakers but they don't seem to be specd as well.

Having heard both of them I would say they are very similar in terms of sound. Build quality slightly better on the 3010i. I own a pair of monitor audio bronze 2 and think they are very good speakers but just recently upgraded to KEF R300’s, My amp can run both sets of speakers so it’s good for a change...sometimes. I reckon the Q’s would be a better fit for the Yamaha against the monitor audios Imo.

Ive got an as501 paired with q3050s but also have a pair of 3020s. I really need to try the 3020s with the amp as only run them with my avr, but seem to remember them being clearer so want to how they sound with a stereo amp. With regards to your question, I'm happy with the sound from the pairing of q acoustics with yamaha (although i do not have any experience of other setups to compare to).

Thanks for the help. I think one if the q's might be a winner.
Does any one know if richer sounds would demo the speakers on a 501 and do a home delivery if I purchased in store?

Richer Sounds do not have the 501 listed on their web site. However if they have the speakers you want in stock in a branch near you then you could take the 501 that you are considering buying with you if you do take up that option. I've often taken my own kit with me to auditions.

    Hello there

    All good recommendations above.

Going to throw another into the mix, how about the Dali Zensor 1 these can be picked up for £150 and are a steal, or if you want to go up in size you have Dali Zensor 3.

I demoed the Q Acoustics (can not remember what modal at the time maybe 2020) and the Dali Zensors.

The Dali just piped it for me at the time, just something about there sound, but on another day I could of gone the Q Acoustics route. Speakers are a personal thing, and try and go listen to as many as you can, you also got to like the look of them.

These are all good speakers but, in my experience, differ slightly in presentation. I love the Q Acoustic sound which is warm, wide and refined. Missions are lively with punch and drive. The Dalis have a lovely, detailed mid range. The Yamaha is a fairly neutral amp which would work well with any of these choices. It all comes down to personal preference. Don’t worry about any of these standmount speakers’ ability to fill a room with an open presentation, as long as they are positioned well. Get listening is my advice.
