OK - I'm relatively new to the world of DVD, when reading reviews of DVD's I keep seeing references to things called 'artifacts'. I have deduced from the context of these reviews that these 'artifacts' are not desirable things to have. What are they, and what do they look like???

    Yours ignorantly...

If you have seen OnDigital you will know what an artifact is. (ie. when ever some turns on a light or uses a drill)

It normally occurs on dvd due to poor encoding (fire, dust clouds are likely places) you will see small square blocks where the player does not have enough information to reproduce that part of the image.

Ahhh - pixelation. Yeah I have noticed that from time to time on a couple of poor quality transfers. 'Artifacts' seems a daft name for it though...

    Thanks!

well really an artefact is ANY problem with the picture that shouldn't really be there, but isn't actually a fault.

the 'pixelation' mentioned (actually macro-blocking from the M-PEG compression rate) is simply one artefact of many possible different ones that can be seen, it's simply a short name to cover a multitude of sins!

others include 100Hz smearing, dot crawl, hanging dots, banding, hooking, and 3:2 pull down, all of these are caused by 'correct' operation of parts of your system, but because the system is actually working to spec, it's not a genuine fault but it would be better if they weren't there.

    Hope this helps !
