Did anyone watch the Arsenal game last night on ITV1 in digital?

What the heck were those columns for on the left and right edges?

I switched over to analogue (not widescreen) and they weren't there.

These are used when they have a normal 4:3 image and they want to fill it up to 16:9 for widescreen.

They either have to do that or switch the ratio everytime they go back to the studio.

BBC used to have the worst "side fillers" ever. They constantly changed colour and distracted from the main picture.

I was just doing my normal flick through 50 channels to see what crap was on SKY :D and noticed it. Nice of them to care about widescreen owners ;) .

The programme was in anamorphic widescreen, but as the game was taken from a foreign TV company who aren't using widescreen, and because they can't change from anamorphic widescreen to 4:3 in mid-programme, what you got was the 4:3 picture (with nothing missing at all), with the 'posh' borders instead of black to keep it all anamorphicky (not a word I know).

I don't see the problem. I didn't see the game either, because I fell asleep. Arsenal got what they deserved, bunch of crap.

They have been using these for years now. If you don't like them you can change your digibox settings from 16:9 to 4:3 - You will then get the usual squashed image instead.

And as for Arsenal - boy they really blew it!! That was the worst they have played all year. And Deportivo barely bothered playing at all... Personally I think they need to re-think the group stages of the Champion's League.:p

Are we (UK) the only country bothering to make progs in WS.
OK there are a few U.S. progs coming through now but I have yet to see a foreign footy match in 16:9.

Does anyone know whether the World Cup will be broadcast in 16:9? You would think so being in Japan & Korea. But something tells me it's goon be in 'good old' 4:3.

16:9 hasn't penetrated the home market in the USA nearly as well as it has over here, sales of new 4:3 sets are still high, not sure if it is any better in Japan but I would hope so.

I was looking on a site selling tvs the other day, they had hundreds of sets listed, but I couldn't find any in widescreen - then I realised it was a US site!
