Anyone know anything about a new release? Not the Anchor Bay 'Boomstick' edition, but there is a R3 version available distributed by MGM that is alleged to be of much better quality than Anchor Bay's 'director cuts' and has a longer running time? I am holding back on ordering this version in case a superior R1 or R2 version follows at some point.

Here, and its all I can do not to order and be dammed. My ordering finger is poised unless someone knows if there is to be a superior R1/2 version a la Last House On The Left.

    http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1002492075/did-155/code-w/section-videos/

Apparently, the running time here is out, and it runs for about 96+minutes and includes a few scenes not in the Anchor Bay editions. Another factor is that MGM have mastered the print from the original film elements, wheras Anchor Bay used a combination of film and video, hence the sometimes lousy picture.

If that print is supposed to be better then go for it... in fact I might do as well.:D

EDIT: remember no extras though so no commentaries or funny bruce campbell documentaries. that put me off a bit

There's no film elements available for the additional bits that were transferred off videotape for the directors cut. As they don't exist any more I find it hard to believe that anyone could release the directors cut with better PQ.
My guess would be that it isn't exactly the same as the "official" Raimi-endorsed directors cut, but another variation. After all, the European version was a kind of hybrid between the terrible US theatrical cut and the directors cut. I'd imagine it'll be another version of AOD that's a slightly different edit to the others that are already floating around as the bits just don't exist to produce a pristine looking directors cut as Raimi intended it to be seen.

Theres a discussion about this on the Deadites forum at the moment, and someone has printed some screenshots comparing the Anchor Bay/MGM releases and the MGM looks much better, if it is to be believed, and in 5.1 as well.

I'd post a link, but think its against the rules?

Ah, to hell with it, I'm ordering the MGM one, just to see. Its only $20 or so.

*well, its ordered, I'll post back here when it arrives and I've seen it!*

screenshots are on page2 and the difference is amazing, the disk itself looks as though it was produced for a western audience. I'm off to order it.

Yay, arrived this morning. Too bad I won't be able to watch until the weekend, but considering the website claims it was shipped on the 14th, and today is the 19th, that's a fairly speedy delivery. Cost about £16 altogether.

I gave in and ordered a copy after a discussion with a friend that's recently recieved it and said I just wouldn't believe the diference in picture quality. I was adamant I wouldn't cave in but in the end I'm as addicted as the rest of you:blush:

Quite why I need so many copies of one film is beyond me, but there you go:rolleyes:

My question(s) is(are): if the original elements were all in existence already, why did Anchor Bay source the extra footage from a videotape in the first place? Was the cost of getting a copy of the Eastern release of the film shipped to the US really that prohibitive? Did this new version suddenly appear as if by magic from a vault somewhere? How come Sam Raimi didn't have access to his directors cut?

Most importantly, how come it's taken this long for a decent print of the film to surface when it's been released countless times already?
What's the betting Anchor Bay now license the nice looking version and do yet another release in the US and then eventually in the UK, calling it "the ultimate boomstick" or something equally rotten?

How much more life has this old dog got left in it?

I wonder how many people, have bought more than one edition of this film. I have the region one bootleg edition without 5.1 but don't see the point of buying it again

well the picture quality is great, yes the extra footage is a tad grainy but hardly distinguishable from the main footage, there's the odd blemish which looks like its been on a lens or telecine (whatever the hell that is:D ). But overall these are very minor complaints on what is actually a very good release.

tons of deleted scenes, audio commentary, trailer, photo gallery and alternative ending are also there.
