I've finally been able to confirm it: it does do PAL PS, just switch it on in the menu.

I called Marantz about it today, the guy told me PAL PS was still prohibited by the DVD Forum. I answered by telling him that I heard from some people that his product supposedly did do PAL PS. He repeated his first answer, in a tone of voice which made it clear that this prohibition didn't mean a whole lot. He suggested I took a stroll through the menu settings ;)

You called Marantz about a Philips product?

I don't think there is any connection between the two anymore...

    OOPS!!!

I got confused :) Areadvd.de posted a review of the marantz DV4300 last evening, the 963 review has been online for a while now. Since i'm still trying to choose between the two, I mixed it all up.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Anyway, the DV4300 got at least as good a review as the Philips. Apparently they're very similar in performance.

Does the Marantz do Pal Prog Scan? This is implied but not explicit. How much is it?

    Cheers,
    Cal.

I heard from multiple sources that PAL PS can be enabled from the menu. No code, nothing. I haven't been able to try it out though, but I feel pretty confident that it does indeed do PAL PS.

Can anyone confirm 100% that it's PAL progressive? Looks like you can get it for about £250. Is it DVDR+RW compatible?

    Cheers,
    Cal.

    If you can read German:

    http://212.105.197.43/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?threadid=25495

There are some posts here that describe how to enable PAL PS and multiregion, both through remote hack.

This may be a stupid question, but does PAL PS automatically mean a player can also do NTSC PS? I'm fairly convinced the DV4300 does PAL PS now, but I haven't read anywhere that it can do NTSC PS as wel...

I've played around with it in the shop, in the video setup menu there is an option 'Progressive', which is greyed out unless you select component out. Then you can simply turn Progressive to ON and it works.

I tried it with an R2 PAL DVD, it looked gorgeous.

    So there's the confirmation.

    Thanks, sr78.

So now the big question is - do we buy the Philips or the Marantz?

The Philips is more expensive but has the F chip and SACD. People might not be interested in the latter now, but think about in a year's time when every new album is available on Super Audio with 5/6 channels...

I'm torn because I've already splashed out on a DVD recorder, so another three hundred quid for PS DVD player grates a bit.

Which one will everyone go for and why?

    Cheers,
    Cal.

In Holland the players are both the same price, €499. The Philips can actually be found for €420.

The Philips offers upsampling, SACD and a DTS/DD decoder. Some or all units show grey bars on the left side of the screen on some displays (keyword in this sentence is 'some'.). Region free requires special remote.

The Marantz fits very nice with my SR4200 and has an easier region hack (I don't have the special remote required to make the Philips region free). The Marantz has problems with CD playback, it's a little noisy and the CD keeps spinning after the last track has finished. Apparently it also causes problems with 4:3 DVDs, the aspect ratio becomes fixed to 16:9 on some TVs (Panasonic TX32PS20 for one). Note that I haven't tested NTSC PS, and haven't been able to confirm that it can do so (I guess all PAL PS players can also do NTSC PS, but I'm not sure).

I will be comparing them extensively once my dealer gets the 963, but this could be a couple of weeks. I think I'll go for the Philips though.

I've got a Marantz SR4200 too! - but then again I've got a Philips DVDR and CD player. Marantz does seem to have more kudos than Philips though...

My dvdr is not bad at cd's but the 963 sounds like it *should* be pretty good due to it being sold as hi-fi equipment (sacd). That could free the cd player for another room.

One thing I would like is jpeg playback as I don't have a computer at home but I doubt either of them have that.

Unbeatable are doing the DV4300 for £262 including delivery which is a £46 saving on the best price for the 963.

    Cheers,
    Cal.

Philips is now available in Holland for 398 euros (around 255 GBP).

Find best Dutch prices through www.kieskeurig.nl. Most shops on it ship to the UK (but ask them in advance).
