61% of the Blu-ray market was attributed to some 247,000 superfans, who delivered £98.8m of the £161.6m sales. For console games, CDs and DVDs, the share of the market attributed to superfans was smaller, at 34%, 32% and 11%, respectively.

Based on average selling prices, a superfan spending £400 could have bought more than 48 CDs, 32 Blu-rays or nearly 20 vinyl LPs in 12 months. Sound like anyone you know?

Vinyl and Blu-ray sales dominated by "superfans"

I reckon so but how did you find as many as 400 titles there? I wouldn't be surprised if I'd bought as many as 100 from the Land that is pound.

That's really interesting Brian - thanks for posting.

I'm not sure that this makes happy reading for the film studios. It basically tells us that the Blu-ray market is dominated by enthusiasts. In other words it still has not broken into the mainstream in the same way that DVD did and still does.

If you cast your mind back to the Blu-ray Vs HD DVD war both camps believed that DVD would wane and that the replacement Hi-Def format would grow to a similar size and provide the same or greater revenues as DVD.

If I remember correctly; Sony's Frank Simonis said that DVD would be dead by 2013 - replaced entirely by Blu-ray!

I do wonder if he knew how the future would really pan out, whether Sony's then CEO Howard Stringer, would have bothered bribing Warner's into abandoning HD DVD?

So the big conundrum is what happens now that we have three optical disc film formats? I'd hazard a guess that UHD has at least as large, and almost certainly larger, 'superfan base' as Blu-ray. And I'm fairly sure it will remain that way for the rest of the UHD formats life.

      UHD is the new Laserdisc.

It is funny how they try to kill off old formats when shiny new ones come along, but they just refuse to die!

Of course , the above statistics need to be placed into context regarding comparison with download and streaming purchases, and I suspect that the tide has already turned away from physical formats, alas.

Can you remember many talking about the possibility of standard definition material being released on blu? Especially for long running tv series. The amount you'd be able to cram on each disc would have been incredible. That never happened. Instead we have some upscales. For me it's Dr Who and Farscape.

UHD is the new Laserdisc almost sent a chill down my spine. I was an early adapter of LD and stuck with it through thick and thin. I still have my player. Was LD possibly more popular at one point? There were times when HMV, Virgin, some supermarkets and a few other places sold it. I'm not sure if you can get 4K discs at as many outlets. Still I've just gone 4K so that's more sales and another 4K super fan.

Brian - do you think 4K discs offer value for money over Blu-Ray?

I think Blu-Ray definitely offers value over DVD and I have a 4K telly and amp, but am not at all interested in a 4K player as the discs are just so expensive compared to other formats.

As an aside, why did you go 4K as I distinctly remember you posting that you had no interest in the format? I went from a 60" plasma to a 65" OLED as I wanted a bigger screen and I got a 4K amp as I wanted to use it as a central switching hub for my games consoles and Blu-Ray player.

I'm still in the process of upgrading some of my DVD's to Blu-Ray, I don't want to now get on the Blu-Ray to 4K treadmill!

Going for It was a moment of madness I think Derek. The upgrade bug/gene resurfaced. I remember lying awake the night before the day of delivery thinking I'd made a huge mistake. There has been a pretty big improvement in pic quality. How much of that is down to the player and how much is the screen I don't know. One former AVF member had quite a go at plasma screens. I loved mine but it's at least 10 years old now and I daresay screen technology has moved on quite a bit in that time. I went from a 50" to a 55" screen so not a huge difference in size but that's all I want.

I'm enjoying what I'm seeing so far including upscales but is it worth it? That's quite a question. From a pure 4K point of view probably not as there's not a huge number of discs out yet that I want. Most of the titles I'm interested in I already have on blu and I also didn't want to go down the upgrade route. Yet 3 of the 4 discs I've bought so far have have been upgrades and I'm very interested in Die Hard which would be another upgrade. I'm reading reviews before I buy and quite a few of those suggest that the 4K isn't a huge improvement on the standard blu so I'm rejecting them so far. I'm also dismayed that many only have one version of the film in 4K when there's 2 cuts. The other version being on the accompanying blu. I'd like both versions in 4K so I can make the choice. I'm assuming you're already watching upscaled. Did you notice much of a difference?

Sound wise I already have an Atmos amp as my previous amp died on me last year. I have it set up for 7.1 and I'm very unlikely to go full Atmos. The soundtrack on Apollo 13 sounded better than I can remember it ever sounding. My DVD would have been DD 5.1 and the HD DVD would have been DD+ 5.1. The accompanying blu in the set has a DTS MA 5.1 track but I haven't played that.

I've just noticed that neither the 4K or blu of Apollo 13 appear to have the yak track by Jim and Marilyn Lovell. It's the best one I've ever heard so that's quite an omission.

I presume that £400 is an annual spend figure, or approximately £33.33 per month (checked article - yes it's £400 per year).

In which case, I'm not a superfan every month, just occasionally (so no, not a superfan at all)! :)

At the time when Laserdisc were out there was not online retailer selling them so you have to get them in the shops where as now online sellers are the place you will find the vast majority of sales for them and at a guess a bigger market for them.

      Good question!

Like you, I have seen a difference between 1080p and 4K, but it's not night and day, though OLED is a distinct improvement over plasma. Maybe I'd see more of an improvement if I had a 4K player and native 4K discs? But as I said earlier, I don't want to end up on that slippery slope!

And I don't want to give you more sleepless nights, but Atmos is just fabulous! It's one of the biggest changes and improvements I've experienced in my system, going 5.1.4. I'm just using 4 upfiring speakers so it's not "true" Atmos, but sound placement and panning effects are completely on another level and the soundstage is simply huge.

      Worth checking out....;)

Looking at those stats in my opening post the value of blu ray sales are said to less than double that of vinyl lp. That's a bit scarey. I did notice that HMV were selling The Great Showman soundtrack lp at the same price as the 4K disc. That kind of price structure might explain part of it but such an ancient format coming that close to such a new and damn good one is more than a little frightening.
