they're korean - the close encouters certainly is and is probably around the $10 mark at koreandvds so may be kosher

[edit] now I have my doubts. koreandvds dont have either title so if the are pucker I dont know where they're sourced from. the writing on the close encounters does look korean tho.

It's slightly worrying when people offer versions that no one has heard of before. A 4 disc Saving Private Ryan?? What's on the 3rd and 4th discs then?

I have heard of some of them but not the Close Encounters one.

Looks to me like a business not a personal seller and i do find EBay dodgy but i think these items look real as i have heard of some of the items being sold.

As you may have read in another thread, I bought Kill Bill Jap, which I found out afterwards was a bootleg. Should have realised at the time, simply due to the price. However, without wishing to advocate them in any way, I really cannot tell the difference from the real thing, and I wouldn't have known, if the seller hadn't been honest when I asked him. What I'm saying is, it's really hard to spot bootlegs these days, as the quality is so good, so you have to be really careful when buying, especially from Ebay.

I recently bought Schindler's list from Ebay, it was listed as 100% original region 1, new and sealed, the seller had 100% positive feedback, so it looked like a good buy.

I received the dvd yesterday, it came in a pack that had been resealed, it had no security stickers and there is a huge crease all the way down the centre of the sleeve, I assume where the disc and sleeve had been transported flat.

The disc and sleeve looked fairy authentic, but not quite right. The disc had a DVD9 logo on it, I have not seen this on any other of my genuine region 1 dvds, but I have seen it on dodgy Asian bootlegs.

I have tried the film, but not watched it the whole way through, it looked okay, although very grainy in places and the DTS track seemed intact.

Does anybody have any theories on this and can anyone shed any light on what DVD 9 is?

dvd9 means dual-layer and dvd5 means single layer.

Could he/they successfully copy Superbit titles to a normal DVDR? I'd have thought that the DTS bit rate & image quality would take it over the 4.7GB

You can compress titles over the 4.7Gb limit to dvdr but you usually have to remove alot of the audio tracks and extras to keep the quality of the main feature high but even then on some titles it will still not look very good.

It looks like the guy on eBay is selling DVD9 bootlegs which are 1:1 from the original and are produced in factories so they contain everything that is on the original and at the same quality, it is impossible to have lower quality when it is a 1:1, if it wasent for the holographic DVD9 logo and DTS banner on most bootlegs it would be very difficult to tell them apart from the original, im sure alot of people who buy these dvds off eBay never know that they have bought a bootleg, they look that good.

His Close Encounters Superbit is identical to the Japanese R2 cover and slip. However looking closely they appear to be bootlegs.

Unless I am mistaken it has a holographic DVD9 logo in the bottom right hand corner, that would be what gives it away as a bootleg but like I said earlier, if it wasent for that logo it would be nearly impossible to tell it apart from the original.

There is a hologram on the bottom right of the slip case, that is not there on my copy of the superbit (R2 Japan). Other than that it is identical.

I have genuine dvds from Regions 1,2,3 which, although don't have a dvd9 'logo', do have dvd9 written on the packaging.

'Decent' bootlegs are not recorded onto dvdr but dual layer dvd.

There was an R1 official 4 disc version released recently to co-incide with the D-Day 60 years anniversary.

This version has the DTS soundtrack.

I think the other two discs were just stock WW2 documentaries

So it could well be genuine.

    Play USA have it.........

This is exactly what I hate about E bay, it's hard to tell the official merchandise from fakes.

Surely, if you ask the seller directly if they are genuine, or copies, he should tell the truth, and if he doesn't, and you buy in good faith, you have something in writing to use against him, should you wish to instigate proceedings. No big seller is going to want to risk his status on Ebay, by not only selling fakes, but also, telling lies about them, so I would have thought the chances are, they would tell you if they were copies, if you were to ask.
