    I have 2

    Pioneer DVD 414
    Panasonic A310

Both region 1 USA Models w/ power supplys.

Can they play UK discs via a remote code ?

    Or is this inherently impossible?

Can't speak for the two models you quote, but, in general, machines designed for the US do not have any ability to play PAL discs. So, although you might hack them to play R2, the only R2 discs that would be usable, would be Japanese ones (which are NTSC).

You can modify or hack them perhaps, but as nigel says most will only do NTSC. You will not be limited to Japanese R2 but you can also play R3 for example but most certainly not PAL discs (UK R2).
Exceptions to the rule may exist however ...
