Are old RP's worth it?

After asking loads of questions in other forums, it's time to bombard the TV experts with some queries I have. ;)

I'm in the market for a new TV, and what do I see down my local Curry's store, but a Rear-Projection telly with a whopping 43 inch screengoing for as little as £700. Blimey. Budget cinema blokes dream that is.

Trouble is, after reading some of the horror stories on these forums, is it worth getting a RP telly that's about four years old, or should I just plump for a well-respected Philips 32" flat wide screen?

I mean, the Sony KP41DS1 has rave reviews about the picture, but there's been a lot of slagging off Sony RP TV's, and I'm just utterly confused and scared about forking over hard-earned dosh to see it go streaky, smeary, bars rolling everywhere and general doom and gloom.

What are your [experienced] thoughts people?
