I need to know cause I might have a chance on a good deal for AE500.

I currently have a AE200 which is fantastic in every respect apart from it's Black level.

I heard on another forum that the X1 blacks are better the the AE500.

    Is this true.

The X1 is a DLP projector, so yes it will almost certainly have better blacks. However, it was one of the first "budget" DLP projectors and as such will have a slower colour wheel with fewer segments, so you need to "audition" the projector to know if you will suffer from "rainbows".

Thanks Mike for your advice but I really need someone to tell me if the blacks are really deeper.

I've had a older DLP machine before and the rainbows did not bother me.

Basically, a DLP with a 2000:1 contrast ratio will have better blacks than an LCD rated with the same 2000:1 contrast ratio. The AE500 has a contrast ratio of only 1300:1 so I think it's fair to say that the X1 will have better blacks and more dynamic contrast levels.
