I'm soon to be leaving Uk for a while, and wondered if there is any point in taking the digibox with me to Australia.

Is it useless outside of Europe?

It will work on SOME receivable channels.
Be aware that $ky digiboxes only work at 2 symbol rates - 22000 and 27500.
They have no slot for a CAM (Conditional Accerss Module) .
The $ky Videoguard CAM is embedded.
You need to check which FTA (Free To Air) channels will be available where you are going that have the above symbol rates.
You can also only store/add 50 channels maximum.
