Okay, so we have established that the X-Box has some anamorphic games - what about the PS2?

    Anybody know?
Does it ever say on the case?

Also: I know that you can set the output on the PS2 to 16:9, but are all PS2 games in 16:9? If not, what happens?

    Any info gratefully recieved!

    Cheers, Lex.

I think you'll find that the main reason for the 16:9 setting on PS2 is for DVD side of things..
GT3 is anamorphic..and if you check it out you'll see more picture (so it's done properly)..
Moto GP & Moto GP2 are also widescreen but can;t promise they're anamorphic..

This used to annoy me a heck of a lot but I've just got in the habit of playing everything in 16x9 . The proportions of most game characters are way out of whack so its not really all that objectionable when things are stretched a little horizontally. Its certainly preferable to playing in 4x3 on a widescreen set. The only time Ididn't do this was on Riven on the PS but its nearly 16x9 letterboxed so I just zoomed in.

What does annoy me though is split screeners not making use of 16x9 modes. A side by side mode in 16x9 looks much better than in 4x3.
The original Vrally offered this I think.

GT3 will let you split the screen horizontally as well as vertically.

It looks unbelievable on my mates 50" Pioneer Plasma. On two player (horizontal split) you each get a screen size bigger than a lot of 4:3 TVs!

SSX Tricky has both 16:9 and Anamorphic Plus DTS to boot

Put that in your XBOX pipe and smoke it :D

Quite a lot of the games are anamorphic. However, you don't get auto-switching with the standard lead. Get yourself the Blaze RGB scart and you will get a better picture and auto-widescreen switching as well as scart control.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

Doubledoom - could you tell me more about this Blaze Scart Cable (Best place to buy?). I just bought a scart but it gives a worse picture than the lead that came with it - soit is going back to the shop!

    Cheers!

It can be bought from a number of retail outlets. You can order it online.
    link to gameplay site

It allows you to use RGB for games (and DVD if you have action replay installed too). The RGB quality is excellent. It is a vast improvement. The text becomes crystal clear with no shimmering at all.

You get scart control. So when you turn the PS2 on, it automatically goes to the A/V channel.

It also switches automatically between 16:9/wide and your standard zoom mode (on widescreen sets) so no manual changing required.

    I recommend it.

A heck of a lot of games are anamorphic. It can actually be done automatically by the PS2 (it's just a one-line code change to get it to produce an anamorphic render window).

UEFA Champions League & GTA3 do it if you want to add some more to the list.

Its news to me GTA3 has an anamorphic mode. Where is it or does it just go by your browser settings?

I'd also like to assume that if you render anamorphic it will actually give you a wider angle of view rather than a crop?

It's on the in-game menu (I think the sub-menu is called display).
Select 'Wide' and when you get back to the game you'll notice that everything's gone tall and thin :)

Unfortunately it does just crop. I'd imagine that if it did widen the field of view that it would have led to big slowdown problems because of the extra polygons that would have to be rendered. It doesn't look too nice.

What I do is just leave the game in the normal 4:3 display and put my tv in Superwide (4:3 stretch mode). With normal 4:3 pictures this isn't too useful as it crops the top and bottom of the display a bit, but because of the the fact there are black borders at the top and bottom of the screen it just crops the black borders. I do this with all of my games that are lazy NTSC conversions (black borders at the top and bottom), it works a treat :)
