A hard question to answer, but does anyone know if the DV79 will be upgradable to support formats like Windows Media 9 HD, which is coming out in other players in the next few months?

I'm in the market for a HDMI/DVI player, but don't want to spend too much on one that will be obsolete even before the year is finished.

I doubt I can get an answer, but does anyone else have thoughts on this?

    - Kirk.

I think by definition the DV-7x players will not be hardware upgradable, therefore the low price. Only the DV8x and DV2x have been stated to support future upgrades.

Think your a little confused the DV-79 is not cheap unless you think a grand is cheap. I have just ordered the DV-79 from Sevenoaks and would be interested in stuff like future support for WMHD9 too.

But is it feasible to reason the DV79 already has the hardware support for WMHD9, and all it needs is a sw/fw update to enable it? I don't know, just speculating.

WMHD9 will probably only be available on the new high def discs under development (thats if it takes off at all), such as hi def DVD and blue ray which the DV79 will not be able to play. This coupled with the fact that the DV79 has been designed to be a non upgradable player make it fairly irrelivant to speculate if it is possible to do it.
