Hi, just wondering how well these makes generally match? I'm looking at the Arcam A80 amp with Quad 12L bookshelve speakers. This will be going with a denon 1910 as the transport and a TAG DAC20 processor. I often hear people saying how some makes go well with other makes, does anyone have an arcam amp with Quad speakers?

    Thanks. Nick.

Quads - Castles, Id more inclined to check out Primare amplification Nick. Whats you budget ? if its £600-1000 I would have this hitlist amp wise :

Unison Researchs Unico, NAD S300, TACT 1275 Digital Amp, Primare A30.1, Sony TAF-777-ES, Musical Fidelity latest range work very well with Quad/Castles too. All can be bought ex-dem if you keep an eye open.

If your intent on the Arcam side of things : drop the A80, Arcam A22/A32 (different league to the A80 FWIW - much superior).

A lot of stuff has come up recently causing my budget to decrease a bit so I'm looking at spending around £1000 on the speakers and amp, £1200 at a push but I'd prefer nearer £1000. This doesn't have to include interconnects, stands etc.

I'll be happy to go second hand.

Nic with a £1000 and a DAC 20 in my pocket I would checking out these :

    http://www.lintone.co.uk/pre_owned_nav_page.htm
Castle Durham 3s Cherry rrp £399 yours for £199 (they had a buy now price of £199 on Ebay from Lintone) + £8 PP. Right leaves us with £792. Next up I would add an Active sub to those speakers :
    http://www.bkelec.com/new/Special_Offers/Cherry.htm £279+£8 PP.

Leaves £500 for an amplifier, a quick browse around has these :

    http://www.hifiguy.co.uk/
    Exposure Super 15 rrp £800 £350
    Mericus Intrare £1000 £350
    http://www.moorgate.demon.co.uk/forsale.htm
Musical Fidelity X-80s rrp £600 £229 Brand new
Brand New TAG PA10 pre-amp £299 + Brand New Exposure 2010 stereo power amp in BLACK ideal to match TAG £275, BUY these two superb units together for a total price of £574 (+shipping £14) and we'll throw in an Atlas Equator interconnect FREE OF CHARGE!!!

Another option here is to check out the Castle Harlechs a steal @ £599 and Then spend £400 on an Amplifer, plenty going about at that price, then some stage in the future buy a more hefty Amp.

http://www.noteworthyaudio.co.uk/Offers.html Also has some good deals on speakers.

Hifi Rack : £19 Ikea Corras Bedside cabinet no really :
    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/CJRHifi/2ndsystem1.jpg

All do-able within £1000. IMHO. Go 2nd hand & ex-dem, all the dealers above have very good reps keep an eye on them.

Just some ideas, the Tag pre-amp in tandem with a nice PA would be a nice match for your DAC 20.

Wow, thanks for that colin - certainly some deals to be had!

Firstly really want top keep the speakers to bookshelves rather than floorstanders (counts the Castle Harlechs out)

Ideally would have the equipment in silver colour although I know the TAG DAC is in black.

Would rather not have to get a sub and stereo speakers - trying to go for a clean, uncluttered look.

The stand shown - is it no advisable to buy stands with these spikes, or are those a bit of a gimmick? Also as I said the stands don't have to be included in that £1000 budget but I would like a stand that could house a 26" LCD TV on the top of it. There seems to either be hi-fi racks or a/v stands for 42" plasma's - are there any smaller ones?

The problem might be demoing all this stuff on the sites you gave me.

Right that simplifies your search quite a bit then, I would still opt for speakers like the Durhams, and that leaves you with £800 ish for an ex-dem amplifer, the ones that stick in my mind in silver would be the :

    Arcam A22/32
    Unison Unico
    NAD S300
Tacts Semi Digital 1275 brand new this is £990 direct from TACT UK with a 3 week home demo, big hint I know slightly over budget, but this amp is quite special in its spec list:
IMO if I was going to £800 on an amp – I would beg scrape & borrow to try this out.

Nick, you can spike your Hifi rack if you wish, but trust me the weights of Amps & Kit weigh it down pretty well, that Corras rack is going down a storm just now in audiophile circles – its cheap, its inert, and you simply don’t put on the Castor feet at the bottom (you can drill a spike set in if you wish). It will hold a 26” LCD TV no problem IMO. Also check out the Oppli TV stand from Ikea £55.

You can spend a fair amount of things like racks, I wish I had spent more money on kit than I have on my “proper” hifi rack, in truth I don’t think they alter the sound much at all. YMMV.

Again thanks for those suggestions. You seem to be a fan of castle speakers. I'm a little worried about the difference in spending between the speakers and amp, shouldn't it be about equal?

Do you know of any reviews on the Tacts Semi Digital? Had a google but couldn't really find anything.

what are your thoughts on the exposure 3010 intergrated? there was one going for about £400 on ebay last week.

A couple of guys over on HFC have it just now and it seems very positive. £990, Balanced inputs, Balanced Pre-outs, Seriously nice quality binding posts : Serious power reserves. If I was buying an amp at the £1000 mark it would be top of my list, hell its even a better spec than my Primare.

Yep Im a Castle fan, a brand undercut by the press for a long time as they don’t do the “advertising” game in some mags, great speakers. Available at great prices just now :

FWIW I would concentrate on one aspect of your hifi build, ie so you can upgrade in future, ie the TACT amp and TAG DAC are of similar price marks, then in future go for a balanced type system by upgrading the speakers or adding a sub, hence suggesting £200 on speakers (which are in reality £400 speakers). You can get a very decent sound out of cheaper speakers IMHO when your have seriously nice components up stream of them.

Thanks for your help Colin - will do some reading. It sounds like you go by the logic of GIGO garbage in, garbage out.

Do you think the Castle richmonds paired with the tact amp sound a bit bright and lacking in bass?

Do you have to polish your castles frequently?

How would the dynaudio A52 speakers sound with the tact intergrated?
