Is Arcam less expensive in the UK than in the US? What is the average price for an AVR-300? AVR-350? AV7? AV9?

Just curious since I am making somewhat frequent visits to the UK these days and wondered if I could do better than a friend that owns a audipphile business that carry's Arcam.

The prices in the US for UK-based Arcam are very close to following the current pound/dollar exchange rates. This is similar to other UK lines in the States, unlike products that go the other way. Many of the American products that go to the UK suffer up to an 80% premium. Tariffs, or is somebody greedy?

Depends on model.
I think the P1000 is built in the US and therefore it is hit by some taxes when imported to Europe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If the idea is to carry a piece of AV equipment back from UK to USA (in the unlikely event you find it much cheaper here), wouldn't you have to pay more than you save at customs?

Don't get me started!

How about this - B&W XT4 speakers (UK brand - about 30 miles from me)...price in the UK? £1700

Price in the US? $2,500 which at present exchange rates is about £1315! Remember B&W is UK based!

How about another (much cheaper) example?

Felston DD540 (UK manafacturer of lip sync compensation boxes) ...UK price £150, USA price $249 (about £130 but remember, they had to phsically get them to the other side of the pond!).

Don't forget that UK prices include 17.5% VAT while US and Canadian prices exclude the sales tax(es) that might have to be added by the retailer.

For example, in Ontario where I now live there is 6% GST (national Goods & Services Tax, equivalent to UK VAT) and 8% PST (Ontario Provincial Sales Tax) to be added by the retailer.

In many cases that brings the prices over here much closer to those in the UK. My DV137 is selling for C$2,400 before taxes here in Canada, or about £1,125 excluding VAT (£1,322 including VAT).

Just an observation.

Several years ago ARCAM in Canada would cost about 2.5 times the price in the UK, both taxed.

Now the exchange rate is such that the prices are more comparable. The DV137 price is very tempting I must say!

If you buy ARCAM outside the country where you live there's the warranty issue and you'll need the right power cord.

Great points. Thanks to everyone for the input... I wasn't sure if there was a benefit but now I know.

Try living in Denmark if you want to be ripped off. Here an Arcam FMJ A32 costs 15600 Danish Krone which is at todays exchange rate is about £1400.
But then what do you expect in a country where a VW Golf 1.6 with the lowest spec costs £25,000!
