And the rest of the reply:

From what I understand the drive mechanism cahnged at some point and the chipset changed from Vadis 3 to Vadis 5 at some point too, but not sure what benefits this brings. Can be upgraded to latest 27+ spec (which is one below the 27A spec for DVD Audio). 27A will cost £1900 apparently.

Real question in my mind is....older FMJ DV27 better than brand new Diva 88+?

    'Tis me, how's the liz?

...just spoke to Arcam and the full upgrade to 27A spec is £500 which changes the drive, the chipset to Vadis 5 and some of the audio boards. Guy I spoke to reconed an 88+ is better than an original 27. Not sure what the price is to go 27 to 27+ spec though. How much is the one you're looking at on offer for?

    Hi Guys ,

    I am in the same deliema , older DV27 v new 88+
I am swaying towards the FMJ D27 as it will have the ultimate upgrad path versus the 88+ , as DVD A is not important to me right now.

Interesting to hear the Arcam employee opinion on whats sounds bettar head 2 head(88+) , maybe thats why Arcam rushed out the 27+ interim FMJ version to keep the performace gap , while the 27A
was still in development mode ...... food for though me thinks ???

I would (from what I read) disagree that a DV88+ is better than the DV27.

The DV27 has (from reading specs and users comments ... I only owned a DV88) better CD playback and the de-interlacing - hope thats right - chip of the DV27 is better than the Prog Scan output from the Valdus 5 chipset. However a new DV88+ will cost less to upgrade to DV89 spec, and will come with full warranty and dealer backup.

The pricest quoted for upgrades seam to depend on who you talk to - but as the upgrades arn't (IIRC) avaliable yet they probably havn't been fixed.

I would suspect that the chasis & internal components of the DV27 would be of a higher grade...

I think the DV27 is a really good DVD player, not a million miles away from the big boys (Meridian, TAG-which benefit from attaching to their processors)

The DV89 looks a pretty cool machine too.

I haven't compared directly the 88+ and 27 but my initial thoughts were the 88+ is the better of the two, yes the 27 does have SIL etc etc but the Vadis PS is no slouch in this respect and you might even be able to add a SIL 504 at a later stage.
