    Hi again.

I'm on the verge of buying a new dvd player, hopefully an FMJ DV27A player, but have been given the following dilemma.

With the whole HD thing at the moment, am I spending alot of money on a player that will not be as 'good' as blueray or HDDVD players when they come out soon?

For a better picture, would I be better off waiting for blueray/HDDVD players instead of buying an Arcam dvd player right now?

Will the whole blueray/HDDVD thing replace all existing dvds, and make current dvds and players obsolete?

    Please help!!

    Ta.

i think it's a matter of how big your patience is :)

knowing that the battle on the next generation of DVD players is still ongoing !!! so it is not clear what the new standard will be. Once it is settled, manufacturers need to build a decent player.

I assume you buy the DV27A for its picture AND music capabilities. It will be years when a comparable good device will be manufactured...... are you willing to wait that long or start enjoying right now?

Further more, you will need to buy DVD's based on the new standard and I guess your current library is stuffed with 'normal' DVD's, which can be perfectly played on the DV27A.

I would say, go for it now and MAYBE trade it in to the new standard once it gets settled and proofed.
Normally all new standards are downwards compatible

If you wait, you have nothing! I was struggling with the same question so I decided to buy the DV79.

I believe that HDDVD players will be backwards compatible and play standard DVDs whereas Blu Ray won't.

I'd go for the Arcam now and upgrade once the new standards have had a chance to settle down and see which one, if either, wins any format war.

I bought an DV79 recently and have no regrets :)

It shouldn’t be difficult for Blu-Ray players to be backwards compatible, all they need is to incorporate a red laser as well as blue. For example, the PS3 which will play Blu-Ray also plays standard cd’s and dvd’s.

If you want quality now buy the DV27A.

If not, you may just end up chasing the next big thing.

And when I say quality, I really do mean it!

I had this same dilemma myself a while back and ended up getting a 27a. I am now in a great position whereby no matter how long the HD format war takes to pan out I have a superb dvd player to tide me over and enable me to get the best out of current dvds. It's like with pc technology, if you wait for the next big thing you'll be waiting forever.

    Tejstar,
I thought that only HD-DVD players will be DVD compatible, Blu-Ray will have higher capacity but not backward compatibility. Maybe it's changed.

I just purchased a DV27A after selling my DV27. I was waiting for Blu-ray but it seems to take longer and longer to appear.
Then there's the question of the fact that tosh/sony are too stupid to realise that 2 standards will lead to consumer confusion and 2 dead systems - see DVD-Audio/SACD. But that's a subject for a different sub-forum.

    Steve.
