Could someone please explain, in short, the main differences between the various Arcam DVD players. The numbering scheme has got me mightily confused. For example, DV78 appears to be older than DV79, though DV88 seems to be more expensive than a DV78 but older than a DV79 and the same price. I understand the FMJ range is more 'enthusiast' (for people with lot's of money, though I feel I am an enthusiast but just can't afford 1k+ on a DVD player)...., so I am looking at the Diva range (I think)

I'm scouring around looking to see if I can get a decent DVD player for around £500. Denon are getting a bit of a slating at the moment so I'm hanging back a while to see what happens. I have seen some Arcam DVD's come up in the classifieds but I haven't been able work out how new/old the models are. Gizlaroc was selling an Arcam DV89 right within my budget (very tempting) but I wasn't sure how this would fair against say the new Denon 2910 at the same price for new.... it's very confusing (so I might have lost out on a decent buy there for what I want).

As I would need to look at the s/h market to afford Arcam, any guidance on what I should be looking at for £500 (if possible, though recognise I might be wishing on a star) and what new players on the market might compare.

    Thanks :)

if you compare arcam DVD player to other brands, then generally speaking, the Arcam DVD player are far better in playing CD's then other brands. Obviously, you should go out and listen/look for yourself but this really is a rule of thumb.

for some differences on the models:

HiFi Addict - Thanks for that.

I've looked on the Arcam FAQ and it appears the DV89 is an upgrade from the DV88 introducing DVD-A. It does say it supports progressive scan at 525p but only if your display supports component capable of displaying a progressive input. I have a Sony Wega KLVL23M1 with Component (Y, Pb, Pr). Forgive my stupidity, but would this support the progressive input?

I'm really tempted to put in an offer on the DV89 Gizlaroc has in the classifieds but am very nervous as I have never spent this much on a DVD player before! Any advice would be welcomed.

BTW - very likely to be hooked up to the Denon 3805/Castle Compacts/SP4805 in the new year. Is this a suitable marriage?

I've got a DV89, had it for about a year now, and I have to say it's fantastic. I tested it against Denons and Pioneers at the time and it knocked spots of them - especially in CD Sound Quality. I've now hooked it upto a Loewe Spheros 37 LCD - yesterday in fact. Connected it with a QED Quinex SR-CV1 Component cable (Y, Pr, Pb) and change settings to Auto 525p/625. It's stunning the PQ is just awsome.

For £450 I would say it'd be hard to beat, plus you get DVD Audio - which is fantastic as well - even if you don't use it very much

The range seems to go like this :-

    Old models :-
    DV88
DV88+ Adds progressive scan to DV88
DV89 Player includes progressive scan and DVD Audio
    DV27 FMJ range
DV27A Adds DVD audio to DV27

    New range :-
    DV78 £700 RRP
DV79 £1000 RRP - Similar to DV78 but adds DVD Audio and HDMI Out
DV29 Replacement for DV27A includes HDMI output.

Someone correct me if anything above is incorrect as it is from memory.
