I received this months T3 in the mail.. and there was a small article on the DV89... the thing which stood out the most was the price £1300.

Now with any mag the price could be wrong.. but if its true then I guess the upgrade for DV88+ owners will be £300 rather than £200... I really hope DVD-A is worth the dosh.

I do hope though that the upgrade does not arrive too soon as I am now completely skint..:(

    Cheers

My understanding (from what I remember from what John Dawson has said) is that the upgrade will be around £400 for exisiting owners.

There may be a reduction for people who have bought the DV88+ close to when the DV89 is released though.

It gets worse by the minute.. I don't think its worth £400 not with the current lack of titles.

    Matt,

I got the impression from the arcam boys at the bristol show the upgrade is £300.

Got to ask having heard the demo on saturday is it worth it at this point in time, with limited software and the slight improvement in audio quality for a third of the player price!

I spoke to John Dawson himself at the Bristol Show, and he confirmed the upgrade for the DV88+ will be £300.

I heard the demo at the show and it was noticeably better, especially on the lower frequencies which seemed much fuller and more detailed.

I have the DV27 so an upgrade would mean a new motherboard which includes the Zoran 5 chipset - I doubt that will cost £300... more like £500-£600.

Is it worth it? Not convinced, not when there's SACD to consider! Have a look on play.com for DVD-A and SACD titles - DVD-A is much cheaper.

Think I'd rather get a dedicated CD player. The DV27 is OK, but it can't match even a £500 CD player.

Well if the record industry news is to be believed then it's only Sony that are producing SACD only ... I guess the other companies will produce both ?

The Arcam guys at the Bristol show were saying about £500 for the DV88-DV89 upgrade. The good thing is that the upgrade requires a big processor, so for the £500 you get prog scan too :)

I can't remember where I read it ... but I read online or in the press somewhere that Sony (Columbia, etc) had said that "they wouldn't be the last major company to start producing DVD-A" (thats the jist ... maybe not the exact words)

well I have already paid £400 to get my DV88 to DV88+ spec... it surely can't be only £500 to go the whole way ???

I am under the impression that DV88+ and DV27+ upgrade to DVD-A is £300. The £500 charge is for DV88 or DV27 to DVD-A, it's a more substantial upgrade.

But this means, in effect, the upgrade you paid £400 is now £200 (if you also upgrade to DVD-A). I'd give Arcam a call and check with them.

So what does the upgrade actually consist of for a DV 88+ owner, given that it has progressive scan does that mean the upgrade can happen without changing the processor? I was under the impression that it might just be a software only upgrade... wrong again I guess. So what new bits of hardware will Arcam being putting in? And does it mean the player has to go back to Arcam - can't imagine doing without it for more than a few days?

IIRC John Dawson has said on the forum that the dvd-a upgrade will be a back-to-base ... unless there are dealers with v.competent technicians ...

Its a extra board for the DV88+ upgrade.. as they need to add the 6 phono sockets on the back of the player :)

I am going to wait and see what happens when the players start to ship.. maybe I'll sell mine and then buy one new .. who knows..
though they better improve the number and selection of DVD-A soon.. I have 4 albums so far (Missy E,Linkin Park,Bkork,Elvis) and nothing else really takes my fancy yet.

I think first I should sort out a display so I can use the progscan features I paid for

Decent independants with experienced staff should be able to do the upgrade easily. We used to have to change alsorts of boards in various bits of equipment at work, shouldn't be too different.:smashin:

    copied from http://www.envytech.co.uk/arcamdvd/

Big news with the DV89 coming out in around 8-10 weeks time with DVD Audio (DVD-A) compatibility. There will be a number of upgrades available for DV88/DV88P/DV88Plus owners around 4-6 weeks after that. Pricing does not yet appear to be fixed but in the 300-750GBP range presumably depending on which model of DV88 you have. What exactly this will entail has yet to be revealed other than the upgrade will take you to full DV89 specification.
