OK, I've finally decided between one of these two players. There is an approximate £400 difference between the two, now is it really worth paying the extra money to get the Arcam? I've heard nothing but good things about Arcam (never having owned one myself - I've tended to stick with Toshiba and Sony) but at the same time, this new Pioneer is getting rave reviews.

I plan on getting a plasma screen within 3 months also, the Panasonic TH37PW5B looks to be at the top of my price range at the moment (around £3000) so Progressive scan is a must-have for the DVD player.

Any advice from the knowledgable chaps on these forums will be greatly appreciated.

I have an arcam dv88+ and find it a brillant dvd (& cd) player, but I have heard good things about the pio as well.

What exactly do you need the dvd player to do?

Have superb picture and sound, a SCART output, component output, onboard DTS decoder, NTSC and PAL progressive scan capability and play my standard music CDs too, perhaps if it had extra audio features like SACD or DVD-Audio (I haven't heard either of these formats but have heard they are supposed to be better than normal music CDs) then that would be good too. :)

    Hi stigdu,

Just a quick word of advice,

Don't leave your intended Panny 37" plasma purchase too long!

They will be discontinuing the 37" panel when the 6 series models are introduced in a few months time.

For more info see the Plasma Display Forum.

ps: You can currently pick up a new 5 Series 42" Panny for £2,650 @ www.ilgroup.co.uk

    Best Regards,
    KBDVD.

The DV89 absolutely slaughters the Pio with CDs and DVD-A... of course it doesn't do SACD.

    I'd go for the Arcam.

Many thanks for the advice so far guys - cheers KBDVD - I didn't know that was being discontinued....although I have to admit, I do rather like the look of this Pioneer 42"-er I've been reading about though it's a bit pricey at £4500...

If you want reliability and flexibility (DVD-A and SACD)- go with the Pioneer. I cannot agree that that the DV89 "slaughters" the Pioneer - though I am sure many people would prefer the Arcam as I prefer the Pioneer

I certainly heard the DV88+ against the Pioneer playing CDs and to be quite honest I found them boh to be extremely good.

as for that pioneer plasma. instead of opting for the PDP433HDE, opt for the better (and less expensive - AND PAL progressive compatible) PDP433MXE. You can probably find this for around £3400. Oh and I'd opt for the Arcam DV89, as I think SACD is a waste of time.

Bear in mind that with the DV88+, and therefore, I assume, the DV89, you cannot use the component and SCART outputs at the same time. If you even leave the SCART plugged in, the component outputs are dimmed.

Not only that, but the sockets are so close together, that if you are using heavy component cables, you can't even physically connect both sets of outputs...

    Hi Stigdu,

I'd also recommend the Pioneer 757 - superb machine.;) You can put the £400 saved on that towards the 433MXE plasma. :smashin:

SACD is excellent - I was listening to multi-channel SACD's last night and it was breathtaking. I haven't listened to CD's in weeks........

The DVD-A of Eric Clapton and BB King is great as well.

I've never heard the Arcam so I can't comment on which player is better.

I would suggest that £400 buys some analogue interconnects and a lot of disks though ;-)

    Cheers
    Gary

I would pay the extra money and get the Arcam and loose SACD. The Arcam is a gem of a player and will go down in history as a classic I think.

Is the 757ai Pal progressive (one of Stigdu's requirements)? I thought it was NTSC progressive only.
