    Hi all,

I am just about to buy an Arcam DV88 - the seller is claiming it is progressive scan enabled which I thought was only possible with a plus version. To add to the confusion the buyer is claiming that it is a brand new item - never been used and sealed - so it couldnt have been upgraded to plus spec.

Is this possible - ie a new bog standard DV88 having progressive scan ? If possible will it be NTSC and/or PAL ?

    Thanks
    Rags

Rags - original DV88s used the Zoran Vaddis 3 processor and do not support progresive scan. You can add a PS module to these however (the Silicon Image based board also used in the DV27 family), to support 525/60 ("NTSC") PS and some players were shipped with this board factory fitted. This model was known as the DV88P.

The DV88 Plus is the current model using the later Zoran Vaddis 5 MPEG decoder and supports 525/60 and 625/50 ("PAL") PS out of the box.

    HTH.

I think you'll also find that the DV88P will also support PAL PS, but as this had yet to be "legal" at the time of production, JD is unable to speculate on this matter.
    Have a look here http://www.envytech.co.uk/arcamdvd/

Thanks John and Robocop - I have emailed the seller to find out whether it is a DV88P or DV88Plus - surprisingly he only advertised it a DV88 but said it was progressive scan enabled.

He claims it is a brand new sealed unit so I imagine that it has to be a factory shipped DV88P or DV88Plus rather than a unit that was upgraded.

If it is only a DV88P how can it be swtiched to enable PAL progressive scan.

Follow the link I posted above and read the section about 2/3 down the page under the "Video" heading.

    Thanks Robocop.

The seller has come back and confirmed that its serial number starts with DV88P. It's a brand new machine - would a P model be worth more than a bog standard DV88 in the second hand market.

I saw the same unit up for sale, but was distracted by a friend phoning me before I could snap it up - well done, looks like you got a bargain!

    Cheers,
    Liam

It cost £300-£350 more for the P/S board, depending whether it was retro-fitted or supplied like it originally.

    Ok thanks guys.

It's definately the P model as its serial number starts with D88P. I am picking it up tomorrow.

Just spoke to nice chap from Arcam (first time I have experienced their customer service and I found it to be excellent) who told me that if I didnt need DVDA then it would not be worthwhile to upgrade it as due to it having the Silicon Images progressive scan board it's video quality is up with some of the FMJ range and is at least equal to if not better than the DV88 Plus model. Sound output is the same.

Do you concur with this view ? - to be honest DVDA doesnt really matter to me.

Picked up the DVD player today. It was brand new - cut open the plastic myself. It's the DV88P model with 1.8 software and it even states Motion Adaptive Progressive Scan on the front of the unit. Everything works fine and have just multiregioned it thanks to the link provided by Robocop.

Just watched a few discs and am very happy with the picture quality. Sound with CD's keeps up with my CD73.

Just one last question - I promise ;) - if I want to get it upgraded to include DVDA, how much does that cost and does that upgrade also give you SACD ?

I think it's around £600. It def will not (and going by what JD has said never will) be able to play SACD.

    rags,

How much did you pay? If you'd rather not say - cool!

Does anyone know if Arcam will be offering a DVI upgrade to any of their players or bringing out a new DVI (with scaling) player in the near future?

I think this question has come up in the Arcam forum . DVI is already out of date apparently!
