Hello! :hiya:

I have an Arcam DV137 and wondered if the 5.1 from SACD can be outputted through the HDMI output?

Got no replies in the DVD forum :)() so I thought I'd try here.

No player except a standalone SACD can output the DSD as its intended , other players rely on analog outs or conversion to PCM for output over HDMI , the Oppo players are the only ones I know of that can do this.

I believe its limited to 92khz/24bit for multichannel and higher for stereo only over HDMI.

Edit , I just found the manual for your player online , and it says this on page 5

Listening to DVD-audio or SACD discs
The high quality of DVD-audio and SACD discs can be realised only by using either the multi-channel
analogue or the HDMI outputs. Using a conventional digital connection between your DVD player and
surround-sound receiver will not allow you to hear these discs at their best, since the audio carried
across the digital link when these discs are played is compromised (i.e. limited to a sample rate of 48K).
This is true for all DVD players and is not a limitation of your DV137.
If you wish to use a surround-sound receiver for decoding your movie sound-track, but want also to
enjoy DVDA/SACD, we recommend either following the connection advice given above for ‘multi-channel
amplifier' in addition to using the digital audio connection, or using an HDMI connection to your
receiver.

So it would seem that you can output over the HDMI , it does not say what format it outputs, but I would imagine its high quality as that is implied in the chapter above.

The DV137 converts SACD to PCM. If I remember you need to change a settings somewhere, I think the HDMI output setting needs to NOT be auto, and you get 176Khz SACD stereo rather than default 44.1.

Thanks both for your replies. I'll be getting the Octavia HDMI-7.1 analogue converter sometime so hopefully I can connect my DV137, BD50 and future HD-DVD player to it and send them all to my AVR350 without using my current 'heath robinson' switching units.:D

Mark, please keep us informed of your experience of the Octava if you do go that route. I've got a DV139 and a Sony BDP-S550 that I need to connect to my NAD T763. I'm currently sitting on the fence w.r.t. the Octava.

I'm also on that fence too!:D If I decided to replace my DV137 & BD50 with the new all-singing all-dancing Oppo, then I wouldn't really need the Octavia. But if I bought the Octavia I wouldn't need to buy the Oppo! Decisions decisions.:D
