My newly acquired Arcam AVR200 blew up this week!

Its been connected for 2 weeks with no problems. Connected to KEF HT2500 speakers the sound quality absolutely floored me.

Then ... for no apparent reason ... an electrical smell and it switched into protection mode. I followed the manual and let it cool down before attemtping to turn it on. Second time smoke appeared from the vents so I quickly turned it off.

Those nice people at Jeffries replaced it for a new one which I am collecting tomorrow.

Being new to home cinema, I am frightened it will happen again. Could I have done something stupidly wrong or was it just an unlucky fault?

    Anyone have any idea?

    Cheers,

    Pip

Sounds like one of those unlucky faults.

At least you´ve got another one now which is the important thing.

I also think you just had bad luck but just to be safe: check your cabling (damaged power chords or speaker cable?) and make sure you haven't hooked up a line-out to another line-out...

I've had my AVR200 for about three months and last night, all of a sudden (whilst watching U2 live in Boston in 5.1) there was a smell of burning. Before I could get up to switch off, there was a bang and sparks were thrown from the back of the amp accompanied by black smoke. What's going on?! I checked and rechecked my connections - only 5 pairs of speaker outs (banana plugs, so definately no wires straying together), a subwoofer out, digital coax to a DV88 and a power cable...

Need to look into that guarantee today...

My question - could any of the rest of my kit have been damaged by an event like this?
