I have an AVR 300 and experience the same results. It is part of the design. Per John Dawson (Arcam's #1) the AVR volume levels are designed to run without distortion even at the highest level. I regularly set the volume between 70-85db depending on content. You may consider switching the impedance of the receiver to 4ohm if you speakers are designed for it. Here is a link to an old post with some similar information.
