    Hi Missin

The R stands for remote control, the alpha 7 and 8 amps did not have remote controls whereas the 7R and 8R did. But there were also a few tweaks as well (I think an improved power supply) that improved the sound a little - the 7R and 8R were released a bit later than the 7 and 8. If it's any help I used to own an alpha 7 and upgraded to an 8R and the 8R made a significant difference to the sound so I'd go for an 8 rather than a 7. One useful feature the 8R also had was a processor switch that fixed the gain of the 8R and allowed you to add an external AV processor and control the volume of the speakers attached to the 8R from the processor.

Also consider bi-amping with an 8P or 9P. There's always quite a few alpha 8/8Ps and 9/9Ps on ebay at pretty good prices. I can vouch for all of them having moved from 7 to 8s to 9s to 10s over the years. If you can stretch your budget the Alpha 9/9P is a combo that was hard to beat from my experience with the alpha range (before I got seduced by FMJ). I reckon you could probably get both on ebay or ex-dem for less than £500. Hope this helps

Don't think it did include the processor switch, but others might correct me. I'd go for the 8R to be safe.

If you need the AV processor switch (it is a slide switch near the top of the rear panel above the input sockets) then you need an Alpha 8R amplifier. The Alpha 8 does not have this, though it does have remote controlled volume.
