I've recently been thinking about changing my amplifier, I've never been impressed with the musicality of my Pioneer and have missed my old Marantz KI signature 2 channel since I replaced it with the AX3. I am however impressed with the AX3's surround sound on films so what I'd like to know is how good the Arcam alpha 10 amp with the DAVE module is combined with the 3 channel power amp and how it would compare to my much newer AX3?

Hi having had an Alpha 10 with DAVE + 10p +2x9Ps in my set up for about eight years, in their day they were great, and indeed given the right speakers are a fabulous compromise for both music and stereo, you won't be disapointed.

HOWEVER the downside is connectivity and codecs. This is extremely limited so you have to decide whether you can live with that or not.

    Cheers

Can you tell me more about the lack of connectivity please.
    What are codecs?

No HDMI, No 6/7 channel analogue inputs, only a couple of digital (optical/coaxial) inputs, so you are restricted to S-Video or Component in/outputs

It doesn't support anything other than basic DPL, DD/DTS 5.1

But what it does do sounds great......

Well I've had my 7.1 amp for a while now and am still only using 5.1 so that doesn't bother me.
I'm not particularly fussed about HDMI inputs either.
I'm 100% certain that it will blow my Pioneer away with 2 channel stereo, I just wonder how it will compare on surround sound which my AX3 is THX certified for.

It will certainly give your B&Ws the power they deserve (you have the same set as my father-in-law) very nice. Yes stereo I would have thought so, but I'm afraid I have never heard your amp so can't really compare, sorry.

    Cheers

After further investigation on this forum (no work to do :D) I have a new plan, it appears I may be able to use a 2 channel amp in conjunction with my AX3 and have the 2 channel amplifier powering my main speakers while the Pioneer will power the remaning speakers and do the processing as well.

You could get something like a Denon PMA-1500, or an Audiolab 8000 or Musical Fidelity amp with Home Cinema inputs, which would leave your Pioneer as effectively a processor for the front 2 channels, for cinema. Whilst coneecting you CD player to the new amp which would bypass the AX altogether for music. However, for movies you might not gain that much benefit, alittle more drive to the L/R speakers is all.

But if your happy with the surround ability of the Pioneer this may be your best bet. I toyed with the idea myself a year ago, but dont think it would help me in the long run, as I don't use cd's anymore hardly (!), and won't improve my cinema experience that much.

I'm not too fussed about it improving the sound for home cinema, I was worried about it degrading the sound though, reading your post it appears this wont be the case.

I have an alpha 10 with dave and having a problem setting up a playstation 3 with optical (Monster) lead to it. Any idea if it could be a codec which is missing from blue ray as there is no sound at all.

I have had this system since new and agree it has done me proud over the years. A great way to get 5.1 and DTS from my FMJ 27A.
