Aquarium and Tropical/Marine Fish chit chat thread

Thanks. I’ll ask the missus to get one from the supermarket on the next trip. I think they can only get in the top due to the foam and stuff in the bag further down, so I assume you mean to just shove the puff thing in whole, rather than use it as an internal liner?

This is the type of thing the buggers now call home: Juwel Bioflow 3.0 Complete Filter System 600l/h - Specialist Suppliers of Aquariums & Vivariums
I wrap it around the intake which I take it are at the bottom with those grills. They will survive in the filter, my son had Cherry shrimp and they would swim in and out of the filter. Amanos grow quite quickly and will soon be too big to get in there. Give them plenty of shelter in the tank.

Have you ever kept them before?

If not you will see exoskeletons lying in the tank as they shed their skin when getting bigger. If you don't see the shrimp for a while but see those exos then they are doing well.

There’s plenty of shelter in the tank. They’ve just never found it. I’ve never kept them before but do have an Armoured Shrimp too, who is also very unsociable. He seems to come out in the late evening when the light’s out. He was upside down the other day doing his hand fanning thing...

I've got 15 in a discus tank which has some plants in it. They help keep the tank very clean, they do love discus poo. Some are almost two inches long now, been in the tank for over two years.

Finally bit the bullet this week and gone for a pressurised co2 setup for my tank :D

I can't remember what setup you've got, but I'm starting to think that's might be something to look into for my 200L. I think in the long run it works out comparable on costs to buying liquid carbon and fertilizers like I am at the moment.

On the subject of liquid carbon, what do people recommend please? I'm almost out of Flourish Excel and was expecting more of a result.

I tried both Excel and TNC Carbon. I never had amazing results with either and in fact learned that a lot of plants do not like liquid carbon and end up melting which is part of the reason I've decided to give actual co2 a go.

Mines only a small 80L tank but it's full of plants. Went for the whole jungle look as opposed to the perfect scapped type tanks.

Never had plants last more than a week or two as the fish just eat them ☹️

Even fish are vegan these days :(

To keep on topic - how do fish to with vibrations? I've wanted a decent tank for a while, but it would have to live in the room with the surround sound setup...

What advice would people give to a beginner looking to get involved in starting an aquarium?

I’m debating buying a tank and some fish, but literally have no idea where to begin and want to fully understand what I’m getting involved in before committing

I'd begin with what size tank can you physically fit in your home and get the biggest you can. Bigger tanks are harder to go wrong as you've a far bigger buffer is something is wrong due to the larger water volumes also will allow you to pick far more types of fish.

Then you need to decide on cold water, tropical, marine (Would not recommend marine to a beginner)
what type of fish you want
what type of filter
whether you want to go for a planted tank
how much time do you want to spend maintaining the tank.

Never had more then goldfish myself, but everyone I know who has dipped their toes into the great adventure of a large tank has loved it for a short while, hated it for some time, and then killed everything off and stuck in on FB for a fraction of rrp...

Dedication required.

From what I;be been trying to read up online I’d be looking to go for tropical fish, is there a good website or a go to website that would be good for a beginner to read up on?

CO2 injection makes a big difference to a planted aquarium. Plants are more vibrant in colour and grow much healthier. You will still need ferts though. Once set up with a 200 litre tank a 2kg CO2 cylinder will easily last for four to five months.

Buying CO2 from aquarium shops can cost you a lot and the best thing to do is to find a fire extinguisher supplies near to your home. You may initially have to purchase a 2kg CO2 extinguisher and have it converted to a simple turn valve replacing the trigger and horn mechanism. Then get it refilled by them when you need.

You will also need a good two stage regulator, don't get a single stage as when the cylinder gets very low it will cause a CO2 dump that will put too much CO2 into the water and more than likely suffocate the fish. A two stage will not do this.

This is the one we have and the customer services from Aquarium Gardens is second to none.

Saw this thought you peeps may be interested if you have a big enough aquarium  .

Anyone have any tips for getting rid of what looks like hair algae or spyro?

Small fine areas appearing on my tank ornaments, can't dose chemicals due to having shrimp and snails in there.

I've just done a 30% water change, and physically cleaned what I can see off.

I've heard it could be my lights being too bright so turned them down.

Looks good at the moment but worried it'll return

I blacked mine out for 4 days with bin liners. I didn't think it had much effect, but it all seemed to disappear shortly after. Do a 50% water change after that, and add ferts and carbon. Google the blackout method.

I have a 10 gallon fish tank doing well. I have 5 cherry barbs and a Angel yes I know some people say the 10 is not big enough for the Angel but he's the biggest fish in there and the only one of his kind. ive been doing 1/2 water changes 1 time monthly. everyone seems happy.

The extender on my Eheim +4 got moved and cant find which position to get maximum filtering rather than bypassing some of the filter when the water getting cloudy?
Is the max use of the filter where the arrow is at the narrow mark?

Far too small for a Angel. They are big bad tempered Chiclids towards other fish if put under stress. In a 10 gallon tank you should be changing 30% of your water at least twice a week.

A Red Arowana. Have you seen how much they sell for. Before the lockdown my local Maidenhead had a Silver one for sale, £4500.

There are people who must have huge aquariums, they are the equivalent of those AV enthusiasts then big cinema room full of high cost kit. Discus are big enough for me.

I highly doubt keeping a fish in a tank that is far too small for it and only changing 50% of the water once a month makes for happy fish. Just because they are swimming and not dead doesn't mean they're happy.

From what i can find out the current position marked above is the "normal" operation mode with no extension (bypass of pre-filter) so maximum filtration media used if you wish.
although i have read that most people don't use this feature as it normally only buys you a few days at most before you need to do a filter service and clean the pre filter anyway.
