Have read that the airport express can be configured to pick up ur existing wireless signal from router and provide acess to non-wirelss device via ethernet cable. This is done in the airport utility apparantly.

Can the apple tv do the same?

Need to pick up wirelss signal from bt home hub 3 and provide net access to av recvr for net radio etc. plus use of apple tv can then transfer itunes into rcver via hdmi or optical....

Nope, only the Airport's can do this. If you connect an Airport to it you can also make use of Airplay to the av receiver though connecting the ATV as well would also give Airplay support for audio.

There are ethernet to wireless bridges like this that are slightly cheaper than Airports.

Would he audio quality using an airport and monster stereo to optical cable be the same as the hdmi / optical out on the atv? Assuming same source audio streamed from iphone via airplay...?

    Should be it's all digital.

Be aware the Airport uses a mini optical cable connection on it's end so regular optical cables wont work. Just google airport express optical cable and you will see the right ones.

Sorry to be a pain, wha about the stereo outputs on the express against the optical? Again with the same source on the iphone? Limited on number of optical ins, so would either be airport express providing wireless bridge and stereo out or atv providing hdmi out with an addtional wifi adaptor....

No idea to be honest, the only way to judge would be with your own equipment and testing the two interfaces.
