Apple TV 4K Owners Thread

I think I asked this a while back but can't be sure, Im thinking about trying the internal apps on my lg Oled, would I be missing anything if I got rid of apple 4k box.

I only use it for Netlfix and Apple TV purchased movies.

I also heard that the apple tv app has had an update recently to enable Atmos.

I know this is the "owners" thread so I presume most on here still prefer the apple box, just feel I'm using it when I don't really need to for the few apps I use.

I think you mean 4:2:0. But, what happens if you set the ATV to output YCbCr 4:4:4?

There has to be a conversion from YCbCr 4:2:0 at some point in the video chain and the ATV should be perfectly capable of doing such a thing and outputting it within the bandwidth requirements of the HDMI ports and cables. At 24fps at least.

After a bit of googling it’s a known issue, some TVs show it worse than others. The Apple tv doesn’t convert 4:2:0 properly. There is no way to force it to send 4:2:0 either. I’ve managed to get it to show up on my FZ by adjusting low level gamma. I think the slightly crushed blacks on the FZ juts masked it before.
I’ve I force it to output 4:4:4 then all content flickers. But if I set it to 4:2:0 at least hdr content is output correctly at 4:2:0

Based on my current issues with the ATV if I could get the Apple+ app and Disney+ app on my Panasonic I’d ditch the ATV in a heartbeat.

Interesting and good to know.

Is the effect you're seeing chroma overshoot?

Installed them all now, going to see how i find them, its the lg remote that will take the most getting used to as I like the apple remote myself.

Someone said that The Sinner was 0.87mbps as a casualty of the throttling. If that's still the case then I wouldn't worry too much about artefacts.

Ok so with regards to recommend settings and the choice between SDR 50hz and 60hz, I was leaving mine at 60hz due to playing the odd game.
Anyhow this afternoon I changed it to 50hz as haven’t used it for games for a while now and now I’ve just found a reason to put it back to 60hz.
Just watch this YouTube trailer for The Boys season 2 and it was offputtingly jumpy during panning scenes, changed it back to 60hz and no more jumpyness.
Hopefully when TvOS 14 gets released YouTube will support Match Frame Rate again like it used to.

It’s running at full 5mbps again now so it’s not that.
I don’t think im supposed to ever get a one stop box that’s just works. That would be to easy and boring.
I will use the TVs built in Netflix app for now

I had to switch my power off on my surround system, when I switched back on and checked my settings in the Atv box they had all reverted back to original settings. I thought they would be at the settings I used. Does it not keep your own settings.

I've switched mine off a couple of times today as I was changing processors over. My settings stayed as they were. Not sure why my experience would be different to yours.

Update: I’ve had time this evening to check a few more films and programmes that are SDR. Including others on Netflix and it’s not happening in similar low lit scenes. It must just be an issue with the Sinner when playing via the Apple TV. It’s a bit random but at least it’s not a fault with my new GZ950.

Hello all, quick question relating to ATV sorry if its been covered in the previous pages. I just purchased a new OLED and its media player is good but doesn't support DTS audio. Ive been looking into an ATV 4K as I use apple a lot at home.

My question is I have read Infuse (and now plex) will play 4K and HDR content from network storage such as Ext HDD's. If so what is people's preference for apps that will do that? I am happy to pay for Infuse Pro or Plex pass if that will do everything I want without cables to the ATV.

I have infuse and my wdtv live hub can't read from its HDD fast enough to play high bitrate content. Something to bare in mind.

The main thing to worry about with The Sinner is the lead detective’s mumbling. :/

I haven't got round to watching it yet. Just about to finish season 3 of Dark. But I'll probably have to rewatch Dark as I've no idea what's going on.

I have Infuse as a stop gap (i used to have a Zappiti SE but sent it back).
Mine plays with no issues whatsoever(4k films) from my WD Duo attached through my network.
The only problem i have with Infuse is for some reason it won't recognise / load all the Game Of Thrones seasons, only from 1-4, i've tried everything but no joy.
It also sometimes doubles up on some titles, but for £1 month, can't quibble.

Thank you, just the sort of advice I am after. I realise infuse does have a trail period as well to test before jumping in and paying. Thanks
