Hi,

Does anyone know the file size (and therefore inherent quality) penalty between streaming a 1080p movie on Apple 4 gen vs a comparable Blu Ray - both with Denon x4300 upscaling to 4K ?

We've invested too much in Apple downloads to go back to discs but want to marry the right kit with a newly purchased 4K OLED vs an older Sony.

Thanks in advance,

I don't really understand the question. Do you want to know the data rate of downloading/streaming HD via iTunes on an Apple TV versus a Blu-Ray disk?

Blu-Ray is obviously much higher, but the quality difference is subjective.

Any upscaling happens on the fly and therefore a data rate is irrelevant.

Yes - how much data is lost in streaming vs Blu Ray ?

Also interested in your point about the qualitative output being subjective ?

A bluray disc has much better video bitrate and much superior audio format and bitrate compared to a stream. At best most streams are only basic 5.1 compared to the HD audio formats bluray offers (DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-MA, Atmos, etc)

A bluray disc is more approaching the quality and sometimes superior to that of a 4K stream but again the disc has better audio.

Your ATV also won't do HDR which a UHD Bluray disc player will.

Perfect - thanks Bob.

Fair point on ATV. We also stream Netflix / Amazon through a Denon x4300.

Do they suffer the same audio down grade ?

Has been mutterings about a new 4K Apple TV for last few months - maybe something will get announced/confirmed at the next-gen iPad launch later this month/early April ?

Sorry for the delay gents. Marital opportunism required when fault finding.

White flashes are confined to Apple TV. 4K, Blu Ray, Netflix and Amazon are all fine.

HD cabling to the Apple is braided 4K - and 7 identical siblings to other sources work perfectly. OLED is set 1080p so no interlacing issues.

Final strokes - Apple unit is 4th gen and 2 months old from John Lewis. All software updated. Broadband download retested at 64 Mbps.

White flashes don't seem to degrade with bandwidth or increase with contrast

Have I got a diff Apple TV that needs to go back ?

I had a similar issue and it was the HDMI cable. It's worth swapping the cable just to be sure.
