Apple just announced Apple 4K TV HDR (HDR10 & Dolby Vision) that we knew was coming (no info on the sound tho) UPDATE it uses Dolby Digital plus 7.1 so no Atmos but I know my pioneer amp will make a great height track from that anyway.

However why did I say ‘killed 4k BD’?

Because if you purchased a movie in HD they are upgrading for FREE to 4k HDR.

Thus the long list of movies I was going to buy are suddenly only going to be the ones I feel I will be must haves for my 75” ie Star Wars etc.

      What’s your thoughts?

I'm defo getting one, really impressive that HD purchases will automatically be upgraded to 4K for free and that there will not be any increased cost to 4K movies compared to HD.
My only issue is my 4K TV isn't HDR to take full advantage.

No Atmos though, which is a shame.

Apple just killed 4K Blu-ray with compressed garbage with no 3D audio formats?

Other vendors are available but consider I just cancelled £100+ of 4k blu ray discs on pre order.

Netflix and Amazon video arriving soon too.

My point is that it puts huge pressure on BD now. Not just because Apple have done it but it sets a precedent. Others will follow.

Why would you cancel your order? Are you happy wasting money on an inferior product?

It might have the opposite effect. If apple sells 4k movie downloads for £14 then the studios might actually price the uhd blu-ray more competitively. So we get cheaper discs and proper lossless or object audio.

I doubt that downloads of any kind will affect buying decisions for those who enjoy the best quality which means disc.
I would never consider buying a download let alone one from Apple.
Apple is shorthand for "exactly the same as another product but at least 50% dearer"

I would suggest anyone happy to purchase an HD download from Apple are not really the same people who would buy a UHD. Generally that is

What if you haven't got broadband?
What if you don't like Apple?
I have 4K films via Amazon Prime. I buy UHDs. Some people have Spotify and still buy CDs or vinyl.
When has ATV ever been a thing? I only know one person with one.

Whilst I grant you that everyone who follows these announcements will know it .... but not once (that I noticed) did they mention that (by the way) you will need a high spec 4TV to actually see this content properly. If this 'pitch' was an advert on TV - failing to mention that (4K TV required) would get a stiff fine. - thinking of magazine ads where a PC featured for sale (next to a monitor) would have to declare *monitor not included

Probably Apple killed other smart TV OS that were really a disaster.. I will buy it for one obvious reason - I am tired of Web OS

While without Dolby atmos and 3d playback the new Apple TV box can't be a direct replacer for uhd disks or players.

@cooperda A keynote is not an advert on TV. There's no advert regulations that I know of for them. If you had checked the website, you would have seen that they do disclaim everything that has to be disclaimed, including the need for 4k TV. I joined a screenshot if you wanna see for yourself (and a link too.

The ATV 4K can do Dolby Atmos - if the atmos channels are encoded into the DD+ stream and will be passed to the amp to extract as normal ...

Apple would have included Atmos in the tech specs if they were intending to support it.

But there's nothing to 'support' unlike with Dolby Vision which requires a hardware authentification/licence ... the Atmos is just passed through in the Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 stream and then decoded by the amp ...

Dolby Atmos support as in the same way that all other hardware manufacturer includes it in the specs even though 'technically', they only need to list TrueHD. My guess is that Apple do not intend to offer any films in Dolby Atmos on iTunes, hence why they have omitted it in the tech specs, even though it could technically do it.

I have no interest in Apple products. And given the quality of most streaming it's not going to stop me buying UHD disks anytime soon.

Maybe this escapes some people, but Apple aren't the first to introduce a 4K streaming service and nor are they the first or only manufacturer to make devices able to handle UHD and or Dolby Vision.

The question should have been whether the existiting 4K services spelt the end of Blu-ray back when they were introduced nearly 2 years ago? Sales of Blu-ray discs have not declined since the introduction of 4K streaming services. There's also the fact that you are still getting what is basically compressed and lower quality video via any of the streaming services.

Do any of the titles Apple will be vending either HD or UHD include Atmos, DTS:X or even HD audio such as TRueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio? Do Apple still insist on retaining the rights to anything they sell or will you be able to store those files wherever you want and play them back using devices other than those running iTunes or made by Apple?

No, this is not the end of Blu-ray and I wish people would stop hoisting Apple up in the air for doing nothing more than reinventing the wheel. It is like the emperor's new clothes, but the Apple customers are the emperor and Apple are the tailors trying to hoodwink them.

It can do Atmos - via DD+ ... whether the 4K titles they offer have Atmos soundtracks will be another matter - but we'll find out next week ...
