Because they are all making huge profits from customers who have more cash/credit than sense. They play on human psychology and exploit them to the full, testing how far they can push the price. As for further proof, this table says it all.

How is this one of the most beautiful designs??? That black bar at the top, ouch, my eyes hurt, just like someone was saying on the internet, Steve Jobs wouldn't allow something like that.

I'll stick with my 4K Sony. They don't get the publicity that Apple and Samsung get, but they are brilliant phones, nevertheless.

“Battery is only marginally better than the iPhone 8 Plus”

If it’s better than a plus then that’s really good considering the phone is smaller.

I agree the design is atrocious. I do not want it even as a gift.

      Cheers for the review!
One of the most detailed so far.

Surprised, diaappointed that the battery life, a new phone (unused battery) would expect day+ battery life anyway, the fact you are only getting one day out of the battery is a shame.

I’d have loved to see the review dig deeper in to FaceID, trying to fool it / find out areas where it fails. I know some other reviews mentioned issues using it outside due to sun; but I wonder if that’s less of an issue for us in Britain/Ireland ;)

It's a lot faster than these phones, though, for a start. And it does have some other innovations. So while I agree that Apple are playing catch up with some features like wireless charging, in other areas they are still innovating.

Great review, but nothing unexpected in there for me.

I would have been skipping a model this year and keeping my 7 plus if the only option was the 8 plus as an “upgrade” path but the X ticked one important box for me, a large screen in a smaller form factor.

I’ve enjoyed using the 7 plus and love the larger screen over the 7, but both it and the 6 plus I had before it (and my wife’s 6S plus) are just slightly too big for me to comfortably use.

As for those saying it isn’t worth £1K (same as we seem to get every time Apple launch any product ever) are the same people (yes @Spacecat I’m looking at you [emoji6] )that spend £5K on a TV that does just one thing well - displays a pretty moving picture - and for the most part probably sits in a room all alone while you’re out working / partying etc.

I would far rather drop £1K on a phone that I carry with me everywhere and is capable of so much more. It adds functionality in the car, is used with all the smart tech in the house, enables me to carry around all the important information I may need at any given time, 25000 photos with me on the go (no I don’t look at them, I’ve seen them once and I’m a man so don’t need to see them again [emoji6] ).

For me, if there is one piece of tech that is really worth spending on, it’s my phone.

      They already are.

Google and Samsung’s flagships, with comparable storage, are pushing £900.

As usual an Apple thread descends into the usual tropes.

I've had the 7 plus and agree it's just a bit too big / screen size to be ideal. Looking forward to getting the X. Good to see a review based over a longer period of time. Expensive yes but we all value things in different ways.

Google and Samsung are the most talked about but the same is true for other brands including Asus.

I agree that our phones gets so much use,so why not spend a bit more, but it not as it is the only "premium" phone out there. And what really innovative and worthy does it bring to the table? Most reviews go on and on about the method of unlocking the phone!Does it have better build quality? Is the calibrated OLED display better than the one, used by Apple's supplier? Are the dual back cameras better in good conditions and low light? Are the small touches like the FaceID related ones enhancing the ownership experience?Does the faster processor make the phone more responsive? It can do 4k in 24fps,i will give it that.

I am asking, because the Samsung phone can be bought for 540 pounds and can use SD cards, while the 256 Gb Iphone X is more than twice the price.I guess that the laws of dimunishing returns is pretty strong, but if the market decides that the price is acceptable for having the best(even by a small margin) smartphone, the 1000 pounds barrier will became the norm for flagship smartphones next year or the one after.

@David Have you tried any dolby vision content on the iPhone X yet? as I believe the screen is certified as dolby vision.

As always another high score for a way overpriced phone, yet people will pay anything for the Apple name, very sad indeed, as to reviews sorry never seen any website or reviewer give Apple phone a low score, power of company name and popularity over common sense or even sensible mark up I'm afraid to say.

I think the point of view being raised is that, while you are completely correct in your evaluation that £20 jeans serve the same purpose as £300 jeans but people will still pay the higher amount for their own reasons, Apple have made a phone that has the same features found on both older phones, and substantially cheaper phones. The exploitation point of view comes from a company creating a product knowing this, but pricing it far higher than competitors do for the same experience. This can be levied at any high end product, Apple or otherwise. There's no way on earth I personally would pay £1K for a phone, just as I wouldn't pay £300 for jeans when cheaper options exist that serve the same purpose. It is simply not intelligent thinking to waste money like this.

Perhaps "Prudent" would have been a more appropriate word to use in my comment, unless you're brand loyal.

That isn't really fair or accurate. Apple phones get high scores because they're extremely high end devices with high end components. Look at the benchmarks for the CPU and GPU, - they're double the speed of any Android phone on the market. The same is true right throughout the devices - the screens are colour correct, the cameras are class leading etc.

As for the price, you'll pay £800 for a high end Samsung or Google phone, and £1000 for the new Galaxy Note. It's expensive for sure, but not wildly out of whack with other top end products.

The good thing with the smart phone market is that it's now mature enough to satisfy every budget. You can pay £30 for a phone if you like, or as with the iPhone X, you can drop a grand if you want the highest end device ever made.

I've got two coming with the intention of selling on, but either demand is lower or supply is higher than initially rumoured. Delivery is still as soon as 5-6 weeks. They'll likely go back to Apple but I'll have a look and maybe use one for a week. Everything I've seen suggests it doesn't come close to my note8 in the areas I prioritise, but you can't tell for sure without properly using the device.

I am a little cynical about the pricing though. They released this in the same cycle as the ancient looking 8, knowing how desirable the X will look in comparison so can charge this price. Next year the X will be the only form factor but presumably there will be a plus version. So now the smaller phone costs £1k instead of £600. How much will the X plus be? £1300?

Just read comparative review of iphone X vs Samsung note 8 and Google Pixel 2XL and screen wise the iPhone looks to be best OLED/AMOLED option. From pictures it shows the iPhone with much slimmer borders (I assume with video) do the Android phones really have those thick borders? If that's the case the Note 8 is laughably bad.

I don't really understand what you're saying here. The Note8 can fill the whole screen and without a massive chunk encroaching on the content. The iPhone is even worse because if you choose to show the content without the notch in the way then you got enormous virtual borders on the sides and top and bottom making the actual viewing area tiny.
