I know I despise iPods, but i'll will post this anyone, for those who don't know

the following from bbc.co.uk

"Apple has upgraded the original white iPod to a version that plays video.
The gadget will be available in the US next week and crams more storage and a bigger screen into a thinner package.
Still mainly a music player, the revamped gadget will have 30 or 60 GB of storage and will be available in two colours - black and white."

Wonder if there'll be half-second gaps between scenes of a show like there are between tracks on an album? :rotfl:

(Get a sense of humour, chaps. Only mucking about! :D )

well i definitely want one, the slimmer design with the larger screen is definitely a bonus over the current 60gb model, I notice they have moved the earphone jack, wonder if that cures the distortion issue on the current model?

I have my doubts as well about watching video on such a small screen. But regardless, this will probably kill the new Walkmans even before they're launched. In the US, the 30GB will cost the same as the previous 20GB iPod. I suppose Sony was planning to put its 20GB player at the same price point, $299. Unless you're fanatical about gapless playback (my case), there's simply no point in preferring a smaller capacity player with smaller black & white screen, no video, no photo, and a bigger size.

ahhh, well now there is a HUGE gap in capacity let alone between the songs. 512 1gig 2gig 4gig 30gig!!!! 60gig. Apple should make a player thats say around 15gig, it should be as small as they can make a HDD player (like HD5), and they should put all efforts into it to make it a quality player specially for sound. The iPod is for video, the Nano is for showing off, so the 15gig should be for music. THey should make gapless playback for all formats, majorly improve the sound and make a decent EQ, they should try to get massive battery runtime and should be removable. It should have a line out or even optical out, should have colour screen as usual with picture playback, It should be made from higher quality material and be much more durable, glass screen sounds good, should have some of the features of the HD5 and A3000.....etc.......and it should be called the iPod pro
I would buy that.

Sorry forgot to mention line in and optical recording to replace the discontinued Sony MD's and do what sony should have done, a HDD recording device.

Someone get their hands on one of the Video ipods and tell us what its like watching a DVD on it.....

Anyone have any idea if you'd be able to get the iPod photo to play video by playing around with the firmware of the two units - obviously no-one's had a hands-on yet, but is it theoretically possible?

Isn't it bad for your eyes to watch something on such a small screen for extended times?

It's not meant for extended usage is it, it's not meant for movies they want you to download tv episodes and music videos from itms, which will happen because there's a helluva lot of Yanks with disposable income to splash around now and then. It's not as if the battery could stand upto Lord of the Rings is it.

Old 20GB went for £209 this one is around the same weight as a HD5, 50% larger screen while keeping the same width, plus the extended battery, capacity. Sony really aint gonna sell many of those chunky new players are they.

Finally the ipod has the kind of battery I hoped for, 20hours for music, shame that the £299 kinda prices me about of the market, it's not as if I could ever use 60GB. Ridiculous having different battery specs for lower capacity models.

Yes I know it is sad but ....... I took a look at the new IPOD last night and was immediately seduced into ordering the black 60Gig. I do have a little justification as my 20Gig Colour is within 1 Gig of capacity so was looking for additional storage space, it's not the video side of things that really grabbed me but rather, dare I admit, the look of the thing, the bigger screen and a little more battery life.

I realise many people enjoy running down us IPOD fans but you have to admit it is a lovely looking bit of kit.

A bit disappointing, they've reduced the dimensions due to Toshiba's new type of hard drives and given it a slightly larger better screen. They've added limited video support and apparently improved sound quality. Oddly they've removed the port that allowed you to have an in-line remote and they don't include a charger.

It’s a shame there was no 80GB and after all the problems they've had with batteries you would think it would be removable, especially if it's now supposed to support video (battery life might stretch to a film).

I wonder how many people will automatically rush out and buy the 30GB without realising they get majorly skanked with the battery life compared to the 60GB.

I have, it's £75 cheaper and I rarely use it when "isolated" apart from the Gym.

This time I plan to get the new universal dock, seems a very good idea indeed.

I wouldn't be interested in watching stuff on the small screen, but the important thing I believe it has is the TV-OUT socket. This means you plug it into a large screen and can watch it on there, making it a portable link between downloads from the net and the television.

Why would you pay for downloads off the net if you only wanted to watch them on the tele?, the DVD would be better quality and half the price.

Because they will be soon offering downloads of loads of programs from the past that you can download at any time, not just record at broadcast time. Eventually you will be able to download just about the whole of the BBC catalogue from the past whenever you want.

no no. Apple know new pods aren't really for films, hence lack of widescreen

They're more concerned with music videos and short programmes

After reading the specs i dont think i would be upgrading my current 60gb photo version. I think apple have half way in trying to achieve a multi media device and if i were in the market for such a product i would be more likely to consider the new archos or creative products which both have larger 3.5 inch plus screens but are not far off the size of the new ipod. The method of importing or encoding video to the new ipod seems a little restrictive on what you can view and how you can view it.
