A gold crown which I've had for many years decided to part company with the tooth stub it was covering and the dentist decided it's time was up and the remains of the tooth has to be extracted.

So I now have a scrap gold crown to sell which weighs about 4 or 5 grams but I don't know how many carats the gold is. I've browsed the web to try and get an idea how much it's worth but prices seem to vary considerably, so I guess I will have to post it off to one of the online gold dealers and hope they offer me a good price.

Just wondering if anyone here has sold any dental gold recently and how much they got for it.

    Anyone?

Yep, gold trader, check prices. Curious, did you ask for the crown or was it given back to you without asking?

I thought modern dental crowns were not made of gold at all?..rather some kind of metal alloy with a gold colour, porcelain or porcelain covered metal alloy.
I have 2 of the metal jobbies ... pretty sure they're not gold these days.

After Looking at the crown the dentist placed it on his tray. As I was getting ready to leave the nurse was clearing things away. She picked up the crown and said 'did you want to keep the crown?' I said yes please I'm going to cash it in.

Mine is actually around 30 years old. From what I've read, they are a combination of gold and other metals, but the older they are the more likely to be a higher quantity of gold.

Yes it is a wiki how and many of the methods are not that great for a tooth filling - but the density and ceramic plate and above all 'acid test' as seen in many a crappy 'reality' pawn show might help.

6 Ways to Tell if Gold Is Real - wikiHow

In reality you will be in the hands of a gold buyer and finding one that gives you the best deal for however much gold is there will depend on you researching possible buyers a fair bit I reckon.

Good luck - I hope it has some worthwhile gold
