Today's TV by Jane Simon 22 August 2005 BEASTLY BOYS PICK OF THE DAY TAXIDERMY: STUFF THE WORLD BBC2, 9pm CAN you imagine the sci-fi horror movie Hollywood could make - possibly starring Tom Cruise - about an alien race that slaughters humans for the sole purpose of stuffing them and winning a rosette or plaque at the World Taxidermy Championships? Film-maker Morgan Matthews follows a variety of weirdos, sickos and sociopaths - there's no polite way of putting it, really - who do exactly that to animals. I think it's meant to be funny but I can't remember any programme in recent months that has made me feel angrier, sadder and more like shooting my TV set with a high-powered hunting rifle. And my second bullet is reserved for Roy, from Texas, who goes to South Africa to kill a leopard for the Championships, held every two years in Springfield, Illinois. But first, Roy shoots a variety of four-legged creatures just for bait, and a lioness, by accident. Some taxidermists - such as Britain's Jack Fishwick - are content to stuff birds that have died of natural causes. But what are we supposed to make of nine-year-old Victoria (also from the US) who brags: "My nickname is Killer, cos I like to go hunting and kill animals cos it's fun," before setting off with her daddy to murder a deer?
