This is a segment taken from one of my students images taken on a Nikon D40...... Its a night shot, and the segment you can see is the 'halo' around a streetlight.....
I'm not sure if you can see clearly, but what has confused us is the fact that if you look closely its made up of interwoven rectangles, almost like light has refracted of the pixels etc..... I'd really like to let him know what it is so it doesnt happen again when he takes night shots.
