hi there, I'm looking for an av shelf that isn't to high (3-4 shelfs would be ok) but with a depth of about 50cm. It also has to look good :)

    Has anyone got any suggestions?

Just spent £1300 on cupboards and bookshelves with Jali. They fill the alcoves either side of the fireplace. The stuff is very well engineered and not too tough to assemble (once you find the box with the instructions :) ). Big units are HEAVY though (my 10 packages amounted to >250Kg. Anticipate taking some time to finish the MDF (2 coats of undercoat and 2 coats of top coat) to get a really nice finish.

I previously asked them about a custom AV unit but ended up buying off the peg at IKEA.
Their sales team are good and responded to my questions about cutting cable access and minimum door widths pretty promptly.
I'd recommend them and their designer tool is really smart.

I used Jali for a cabinet for av eqpt as I needed doors to keep prying little fingers at bay and there really is nothing out there that doesn't look either victorian or is designed as a corner unit for a 28" CRT.
    Very pleased with the results.

What sort of finish is the mdf ?? can you stain it rather than paint it ?

I think I may go for a radiator cover to go under my plasma, have no grill on it and just put speaker grill cloth on instead, that way I can hide my centre speaker behind it along with all the cables and keep it neater looking than a shelf.

It's plain MDF - no veneer or grain so you would need to paint or veneer it.
Depending on the size a cupboard with grilled doors might be more flexible - download the designer application and have a play, it's very easy and will help you make your mind up.
If you wanted to use veneered MDF then Jali might be able to help you - give them a call they were great on the phone with me.

Just had a go with the desinger app, I think I am going to order a radiator cover to hide the centre speaker and cables.
And I will ring them and see if they can supply a cupboard with a grain on it.
