I'm after a upscaling receiver and am looking at the Sony 3200ES, 5200ES or the Onkyo TX-SR674E. Upscaling from component and hdmi is important.

    Any thoughts?

do you mean upscaling or upconverting? upscaling means altering the resolution of the picture, upconverting simply means changing from one type of connection method to another (ie from s-vid to HDMI or from composite to component etc)

of the sony's only the 5200 does both, the 3200 does upconverting...

    HI,

I mean't upscaling as in taking the inputs and upscaling the resolution to make it more acceptable on a HDTV

Yep your right. the 674 only converts to hdmi and doesnt upscale. Its really so you only need to run one cable to your LCD/plasma. I got the 604 as i wasnt bother about running more than one cable...

    ok :D

    on a more serious note...

far as I know there are no scaling amps below £600....if there are I wouldnt rely on their scaling ability, either that or I wouldnt rely on their amplifying ability...

scaling isnt something that can be done too cheaply, otherwise its more likely to make things worse than the scaling of your display will....

if your display is relatively new and not the cheapest panel available, then let that do the scaling, just make sure you have full upconversion to HDMI so you only need one cable.......

if however you have an older panel or very cheap one, then possibly an amps onboard scaler will be useful......

The 674 does not have preamp outputs and only 5.1 audio via HDMI if this is important to you the Sony amps have pre outs and 7.1 audio via HDMI
